can you buy it retail? or is it download only?

might be fun to play with till vanguard or wow expansion launches. just cant get into the fighting in EQ2. spamming buttons doesnt make it fun, it makes it tedious, but would like to see the new zone.

My Original EQ post was dependant upon Kao playing on Povar Smiley: grin

Is the EQ2 trial like WOW's where it's pretty wide open or is it like the EQ trial where you're herded onto the trial short-bus and unable to leave until you pony up?

What's the grind like? Solo-friendly? Casual friendly? How large is the game world?

Not that I'm jumping in right now but a free seven days is a free seven days.

The first 7 to 8 levels are on an island seperate from the rest of the game, although if you own the game you can leave anytime (and even expect to be able to level). The island holds you by the hand quest wise and is pretty linear. The island does give you an idea of how the game works but, because the quests line is so linear, once you complete it with one character you have more or less done it all.

So it's another trial short-bus.

I'm still burned out on EQ2 - just not motivated to play it. I'm playing WoW again and kind of looking forward to the Burning Crusade expansion. In fact, I just pre-ordered it yesterday. I've got a few toons on Shadow Council to chat with Neph and Goat. I also play on the Cenarian Circle (RP) server since it's a PST-zone server.

Now I've just got to hunt down a good build for my new Dwarf Pally...

The Fae dont start on the island. They start in a section of Gfay. There is no zoning from the fae start area to Gfay so not sure how big a play area there is for the trail. Maybe all of Gfay and Kelethin.

I'm burnt on MMOs and I hate the direction 90% of the new ones are going. Same old same old with some gimmick to try to stand out.

I am looking forward to Warhammer online late next year only because it's going to be heavy PvP (or as they call it realm vs. realm much like DOAC) and because I have played Warhammer PnP and Tabletop wargames for over 15 years and I love the background fluff.

Like the woman you spurned because of your own failings, sometimes I wish I had continued to play DOAC, aside from the ****** graphics the game was more or less what I was looking for.

This is a new trial, no more of that island crap.

As for the game itself.

Nice blend between solo and group play. The grindage isn't too bad. I started in April and playing casually I reached the lvl cap in September. Much more meat to the game than WoW.

If you end up liking the 7 day trial they have a compilation pack which contains the basic game and all expansions to date (including new one) for 39.99 retail.

agree totally. everything has been done and over done with no real innovations since EQ1 launched. just reehashed variations of the same ole same ole.

ill buy Warhammer when it comes out, but again, rehashed DAOC / ShadowBane / AO.

its way past time for something new. or something old perfected, like the origonal EQ1 with a good quest engine and no massive upgrade expansions. mabe toss in a Wii controller, and a way to project it on a 50 inch LCD tv.

burnt out as well. vanguard promises to be another rehashed same ole same ole as well. nothing on the horizon.

And, like the same woman you used to date, $15 is all it takes to get DAoC back into your bedroom.

Yeah, Warhammer Online is the one with a lot of potential and I'm a huge fan of the novels, especially the Gotrek and Felix series. I hope I can get into that beta at some point.

NWS! From seeing the trailer, it looks to have the Warhammer world's grimness and dark sense of humor.

Yeah, I'll probably pass on Vanguard if the reviews are brutal. Only motivation to pick it up is I'm on the Station Pass so it's subscription is already included along with EQ2, EQ1, and SWG (none of which I'm even playing now - I'll probably get back into EQ2 at some point if/when I burn out on WoW).

In the meantime, it's WoW for me for now.

Yea, but like that same woman, you can see in her face what once attracted you to her but now she's old and worn out.

I actually was playing the demo that allowed up to level 6. It was alot of fun actually, loved the depth of the game. Was a little disappointed that the beginning areas were lame carbon copies of each other and that the icons reused from class to class.

Then I went to buy it and saw that it was $40 for the most up to date version with the faerie thingies.
Too much for an old game imo.

That $40 is for the basic game plus the 3 expantions. And if you time it right sometimes Frys has it for $30.

Yup.

40 simoleans nets you EQ2 + Desert of Flames + Kingdom of Sky + Echoes of Faydwer.

Or if you are dirt cheap they have EQ2 classic which is just the original game, costs 10 bucks.
