I haven't seen it or read the books. I've decided it's crap using no criteria whatsoever.

I recommend Roadhouse 2 though. It has Jake Busey.

Isn't that the book that was written by a 12 year old and contains every fantasy cliche in existance?

Yar, 15-19 year old was the timespan. The trailer for the movie has a lot of shinies though. I've never read the book, so I'm not sure what to expect, hence the thread.

How lazy is Eragon as a name for a dragon movie.

"Hmm, we have a book about a Dragon.. can we call it Dragon?"
"Naaah, how about we just increment the first letter, to change the D to an E?"
"Eragon? Sounds good!"

From the trailer, it could really go either way with the CGI. The trailer for Dungeons and Dragons looked pretty too, but man, what a laughably terrible movie.

Oh Jeremy Irons, hahahahaha

Perhaps I should take the kids then. They loved Spykids 1 & 2 and "The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl".

In the same boat with you Eld.

I havent read the books because I always thought they were directed more towards tweens, but I have heard nothing but good reviews on it. Didnt know they were making a movie of it until last week when I saw a cardboard cut out at the local theater and it caught my interest. I'm going to check out the book around Christmas time and if I like it, I'll go see the movie or wait for it to hit On Demand.

The girlfriend has been talking this up for a couple months now, so I'll be seeing it when it comes out. I wonder if they'll be doing an IMAX showing? Might be more interesting checking it out there. I'm more interested in "300" and "Pans Labyrinth".

I'm looking forward to Pan's Labyrinth...it looks purty. Boyfriend and I will go see it over New Year's if it's playing anywhere nearby.

Utter crap D and D the movie may have been, but I still watch it for all the funny as hell allusions to other movies.

I'll be seeing this with the g/f when she comes down for new years- so many films I'd like to see as well as Eragon though- The Fountain, for example.

I thought it was a kid movie initially (Pan's), but it turned out it has an "R" rating and looks somewhat brutal at points. I'm convinced my girlfriend wants to see it solely because the title contains the word labyrinth. I've told her multiple times now, David Bowie is not in this damn movie!

I want to see the Fountain too, even though it's not getting great reviews. I like seeing anything really pretty in the theater, even if the plot is thin or silly.

I'm still irritated that I didn't get a chance to see A Scanner Darkly in the theater.

We've discussions here about Eragon before and I still stand by what I said then.

Quote:
I have Eragon. I picked it up last year in Barnes because I was interested in the author being so young. I was extremely dissatisfied with it because of the obvious rip-offs from Dune and Tolkien names and especially with the use of the name Arya.

You can really tell it was written by a teen and it's just collecting dust on my shelf now because I don't want to read any of the sequels.

Quote:
As I've already mentioned, I was pretty upset with the use of the name Arya (from Game of Thrones) because I felt it didn't fit the character AT ALL. Eragon already sounds like Aragorn. There's the Hadarac Desert, some lake named Ardwen and another called Isenstar. And I can't remember the names, but I found it really annoying that he had fancy fantasy names for some people but really plain names for others like Ken or Eric or something. Too lazy to go flipping through for it.

I haven't seen the trailer for the movie, but I have read the two books. They weren't spectacular, but they held my interest, despite containing WAY too many fantasy cliches. I was shocked to read that they were written by a 15-19 year old, though I guessed that the writer was young (just not that young). I guess his parents have a publishing company and that's the only reason he got published.

I'm going to see it with a friend of mine. She was the one who told me about the books. I hold very little belief the movie will be anything but complete crap though. The books are written well enough considering the kid was a teenager when he wrote them. But they are predictable and it's very easy to see that he was heavily influenced by Tolkien. All in all they are both very easy reads that at the very least hold your interest.

I watched the trailor, and having not read the book or anything, it looks like a "I really liked Tolkien and also The White Dragon...I will combine them for extra goodness!" movie.

I don't think I ever finished reading The White Dragon. I found it to be so completely bloated and boring.

Saturday I bought this book called The Ice Dragon by George RR Martin because it's by the master himself. It was 13 dollars. A short story in disguise. I read that sucker in half an hour and man was I pissed I bought it!

I like most of McCaffery's writing, but then I read the Dragonrider's series as a kid so you can take it for what it's worth. Maybe I wouldn't like them as much now. The White Dragon was not as good as the first two books in the original trilogy. In the second trilogy, likewise, the first two books were really good and the third sucked.

Of course, I am always really irritated when they change who the person is telling the story. I threw the Trumps of Doom across the room (heh heh, that rhymes!)

I still hate DSD for recommending him to me. I got halfway through book 2 or 3 of his whatever series and I gave up in disgust.
