An international team of astronauts will be living and working at a permanent moon base to be built at one of the resource-rich lunar poles within two decades, NASA announced Monday.

Earth's first off-world colonists will cruise the surface in a new-generation lunar lander that will function like a low-gravity "pickup truck," possibly journeying to the dark side to build the most ambitious collection of observatories ever constructed, NASA said.
[...]
In choosing to locate the moon base at either the north or south pole, NASA was persuaded by three factors. One, the sites are relatively unexplored. Two, temperatures are more moderate there than in the searing heat of the equatorial bright side and the numbing cold of the dark side. Lastly, previous NASA moon missions detected the presence of unusual amounts of hydrogen at both poles.

Some scientists have speculated this could be traced to hidden ice deposits, a potential source of water for colonists.

Officials said the area around the south pole has craters that most likely hold volatile gases that could be collected for commercial purposes. Highest on the list of possible targets is helium-3, a form of the gas seldom found on Earth but possibly well-suited as a nuclear power fuel.
The main thing to strike me about the article was the simple fact that, should we continue on this path, pretty soon the bulk of people we'll be sending into space won't be scientists and Air Force veterans but rather laborers and miners and perhaps some form of farmers, etc.

If the opportunity came up to live in a lunar colony came up, would you? Imagine a Haliburton* mining colony collecting helium-3 for shipment home and hiring on people for two year contracts for various labor, scientific or administrative roles. Ignoring any spouses or children you may have, how much would you want for that? Would any amount suffice? Or are you the sort who'd wake up extra early to be first in line? If you did have immediate family and it was possible, would you want them to come with?

Soon to be renamed Weyland-Yutani

Don't have much of a colonist heart in me. I'm more of the displaced native, so I'll be staying put right here, thankyouverymuch.

Hmm i would probley go just to be able to see the earth from the moon and i mean come on how exciting would that be? i think that would probley an adventure of a life time the first of man-kind of to live on the moon. although i dont see it happening any time in the next 20-30 years but who knows any thing is possible i guess.

I'd give a go.

I wouldn't be the first in line by any means but once the made it "safer" to get there, I'd give it a shot. For butt loads of, goverment collected from tax and over paying the company contracts, cash of course.

I'd maybe do it if I was single and younger for no less than six figures per year. Wouldn't be a horrible deal to work from age 23 to 25 and then go home with a few hundred grand in your account (assuming a pay-out at the completion of your contract).

I'd imagine the novelty of being on the moon would wear of very quickly, especially since it's not as if they're going to let you go sightseeing and I'd expect that most of the facility would be underground to shield it from radiation. Even if it's above ground, I wouldn't expect many picture windows. I'm thinking small, cramped and unpleasant most of the time -- much like I'd imagine time in a submarine would be.

One saving grace would be that, with modern telecommunications satellites, I imagine that contact with the folks back home would be a lot easier than it was for terrestial colonists.

I can see it now. All those NASA vans pulling up in front of the Home Depot. They could offer US citizenship for a year or two of labor.

But you're also increasing the distance. In the larger scheme of things, you'd be just as far in case of an emergency.

I wouldn't want to be in the first wave of workers/colonist, but after the first wave or two gets a foot hold on the moon, I would go.

IF I expect to return home to good old earth, they better have good health/exercise program too, with some type of Gravity to work out in. I still have the picture of Loonies having to be wheel about, while visiting earth.

Course on the Theme of Heinlein and The Moon is a Harst Mistress, just making the moon a penal colony could be cheaper then hiring people to work for one or two years contracts.

True, but thanks to the magic of the internet I wouldn't have to send my birthday cards via Spanish galleon across the Atlantic.

I'd rather own own of the contracting companies and get paid buttloads of money to find schmucks to go work on the moon. Maybe go up their once every 6 months with a white-helmetted space suit to make sure everything is going as per expectations. That would be the life.

I'd only go if they issued smart guns and/or pulse rifles when you arrive and your were able to drive in acid proof APC's to and from work. Oh, and I'd like several sentry guns set up around where I sleep.

Tough decision. Of course the thing that comes to mind is the view of earth from the moon, but as has been said, you'd likely be living in a lunar equivalent of a submarine. I don't think I could deal with that kind of cramped living space.

Definately wouldn't go until the colony had been established for a few years. With my luck as soon as I would get there some airlock or seal would blow and I'd get sucked out into a vacuum. I read that heinlein short story, and that does not sound like a pleasant way to die.
