Our money is discriminatory as it is anyway!

I feel kind of stupid that I've never even thought of this before...but yeah, at least in the UK the bills are different sizes and whatnot.

Different sizes would be most weird. Just how many re-designs must we go through?

Why do the blind even carry cash?

What will they do with Debit cards then? You have to confirm the amount when you swipe on that machine thing.

A blind person sort of...well..can't.

Yes they can, they have 2 dots for yes, and 1 for no.

I think the blind you should just carry those old change shooters on their belts filled with the new dollar coins the US Treasury is hawking. Problem solved.

UK Paper Currency has 2 aspects that help teh bl1nd:

1 - Different size for different denomination. Higher Value = larger bill/note

2 - Each note has a textured area whose shape indicates the denomination. A small circle for £5, a diamond for £10 etc. Apparently a quick way for the visually impaired to check a note if they only have one available and can't compare.
(OK - How many Brits knew that one?)

Even as a sighted person I find the size difference helpful when quickly grabbing money from my wallet. Without looking I can pull the right note based on its size.
(Euros are the same too)

Might sound trivial, but we take it for granted and only notice it's a pain in the *** to check the number on every US bill to avoid accidentally handing over too a 10 instead of a 1. Ours are also different coloUrs (Blue=£5, Brown=£10 etc) for quick recognition, whereas all US notes seem to be printed with snot.

That said, ISTR that between my last 2 visits stateside, there is now a slight difference in size of US bills, Can't comnpare as I only have 20s in me wallet.

That's pretty neat-o.

I've never seen a Euro...

Our 50's, 20'3 and 10's are colored now. Not to sure about 100's.

I don't think I've noticed. I carry minimal cash on me and use my debit card for most everything. I must be blind!

They can't confirm the amount. They can press "Yes" on those brail buttons all they want, but right over that button is the amount that they can't see to confirm.

They have to either hope the cashier is honest or bring a friend.

I'd imagine there's quite a few situations where blind people have to hope that a stranger is being honest.

Yet they manage to function anyway.

Well. At the risk of injecting a bit of on-topicness into all the fun...

Was there a specific reason that the American Council for the Blind waited until a few years *after* the US went through a huge revamp and redesign of the paper currency to push this issue?

Dunno. Maybe it might have occured to them say 10-15 years ago when the treasury was talking about making changes to the bills that maybe that would have been a great time to make suggestions that would have required no additional difficulty to implement.

Course. It's possible that they did and the treasury department ignored them. Don't feel like figuring that bit out. Either way, it's a silly waste of time and money for them to go through the process of making changes to each denomination roll them all out and *then* decide they need to change them all again...

Don't really understand what all the fuss is about.

The US dollar is heading down again anyways...

Perhaps you could start using Matabele Gumbo Beads or sumtin'? They're all different.....and they are very pretty too.

I think this is a great idea, i saw something like it on anothe piece of currency, not sure which country tho, where they had a small section of the bill that was a form of plastic, or some other see through material, it was pretty cool. So we would have different shapes for different bills.

I think that would be the best way to do it since a lot of our society is based around the standard measurement that is the dollar 6.5inx2.5in (i think). If we changed the size we would have to redo all the cash drawers in retail shops, all the soda and snack machines, hell even our wallets would be screwed up... I never really thought about this before I heard a story on it on NPR yesterday, then i saw this thread, but man our money does suck for the visually impared...

I happened to have my EBSCO research database open in the other window and it spat out this article. There was an older article from 1995 but it was only available as an abstract.
