I think this is a great idea, i saw something like it on anothe piece of currency, not sure which country tho, where they had a small section of the bill that was a form of plastic, or some other see through material, it was pretty cool. So we would have different shapes for different bills.
I think that would be the best way to do it since a lot of our society is based around the standard measurement that is the dollar 6.5inx2.5in (i think). If we changed the size we would have to redo all the cash drawers in retail shops, all the soda and snack machines, hell even our wallets would be screwed up... I never really thought about this before I heard a story on it on NPR yesterday, then i saw this thread, but man our money does suck for the visually impared...
