Okay, besides the hardware, what software would you suggest as to the virus/spyware/malware, etc.?

Got me my laptop over the weekend and am very happy with it, but have no clue which software I should be using for the malware crap. I know we had a thread about it awhile back, and for the life of me, I can't find it now. Smiley: frown

Oh and I got the DVD Camcorder that records in 5.1 surround sound too. Black Friday is my Kryptonite.

I use Norton internet Security 2007. Macafee is also a good choice, though I personally do not trust them due to an issue I had with them about 4 years go. Microsoft Windows defender, Spybot search and destroy, and javacool spywareblaster are also good to have, though internet security 2007 is not compatable with spybot and windows defender. Spywareblaster is just a known bad site blocker. beyond that, you'll want to have a CD pre made with the installation files for those on it, and a copy of hijackthis as well.

I've used them without issue for years. I have had problems with Maxtor and seagate. so take that for what its worth. PLus the 10krpm drives have additional bearings and case reinforcement.

Weirdness. I can't comment with Maxtor (meh) but I've never had any issues with Seagate.

*shrugs*

I haven't had good luck with maxtor's. All my seagate's still work. Even my 15 year old very old 85MB first hard-drive.

I know you already ordered but for the genreal subject, I periodically create a wishlist computer on Dell.com, and have noticed the price getting lower and lower:

Dell Dimension E520 Configuration:
PROCESSOR Pentium® D Processor 820 with Dual Core Technology (2.80GHz, 800FSB
OPERATING SYSTEM Genuine Windows® XP Media Center 2005 Edition
MEMORY 2GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHz- 2DIMMs
HARD DRIVE 250GB Serial ATA Hard Drive (7200RPM) w/DataBurst Cacheâ„¢
OPTICAL DRIVE Dual Drives: 16x DVD-ROM Drive + 16x DVD+/-RW edit
MONITOR 19 inch E197FP Analog Flat Panel
VIDEO CARD 256MB nVidia Geforce 7300LE TurboCache
SOUND Integrated 7.1 Channel Audio

$899 and delivery is free. I think it compares favorably to Kaos build in the processor, memmory, optical drive and hard drive, though a little less in the video card and mother board but should run everything out there with all the incidentals from case, new flat screen monitor, 1 year warranty etc. included.

Though my preference is to wait until after the new windows oeprating system is out and debugged. Your computer should run better with the new operating system installed first then the software, rather than an upgrade ontop the old operating system and software. One problem I usually have wiht the build it yourself is the lack of software on the comuter, I want a licensed copy of the operating system and microsoft office, and I still want to use the old computer I have so I can't transfer that over.

you will get more bang for your buck going with AMD over pentium. better performance for less money, just not the absolute latest and greatest.

forget the duel video cards. they are still in their infancy and need a bit more development before they are ready as a vialble upgrade. for instance, the radeon briged set up was showing mixed results, better performing in some bench marks and not as good in other bench marks when compared to a single card with the same processor on it. you dont get twice the performance with a duel card set up, just twice the price.

that said, PCI-E (express) is the latest rage in video cards ATM. seems going back to a pci slot somehow increased performace over the agp slot by two fold. kind of like going back to bell bottoms when you run out of new ideas. anyway, you will need a motherboard that supports PCI-E to take advantage of it.

ASUS motherboard. cant go wrong. fairly inexpensive, and reliable.

SATA hard drives have come way down in price as they should have. you can pick up a raptor 10,000 rpm hard drive for under 100 bucks now. make sure your motherboard can also support SATA drives.

you will need the best ram your motherboard will support. crucil will list what you need for you based on your motherboard, its a good site for finding what ram you need, but not for the best price. try www.pricewatch.com for prices.

sound card. dont get one. huge waste of money. almost all built in sound cards on motherboards are as good quality as a soundblaster live card. infact, the last asus motherboard i used had a 5.1 soundblaster compatable built in sound card. means you have 5 seperate channels for speakers for surround sound and 1 channel dedicated to bass. built in. for no extra money.

a good site for figuring out what you need and for how much money is www.pricewatch.com . for instance, i picked up a 512 mb PCI-E radeon 1600 video card there for the same money it would have cost me to buy the 256 radeon 850 PCI-E card for in tiger direct. it was, however, not a retail box. IE, a plain white box with just the video card and drivers techs use to fix or build computers. no extras, like the free games and stuff that come with the retail box.

PERSONALLY, i would wait till march to built it. late feburary is usually when the next latest and greatest hit the market, so as to get the most bang for their buck on products they introduced through out the year during the christmas shopping season. in march, this years latest and greatest will be replaced with next years latest and greatest, and you can get the system you plan on building today for significantly less money in 3 months. march, every other year, is when i plan my upgrades.
