It's really not as bad as you all make it out to be. We use both 1 and 2 dollar coins here and you end up spending them so fast they don't have time to accumulate into an uncomfortable lump'o'coins. Also, using them in vending machines is nicer imo. Have you ever stood there, trying dollar bill after dollar bill because the vending machine won't read them? Doesn't happen too often with coins. Got to admit though, they really need someone else designing yours, they're pretty nasty looking.

The sad thing is that the president dollars are a step up from the ones with Hagitha on them.

I've no idea if its true or not but according to the Big Book of Losers, the Suzie B got uglied up after feminists protested that Susan looked too pretty on the coin prototypes.

Yeah. Usually the 5th slot is used for something like extra rolls, or slips of paper/reciepts, checks, etc...

Typically half-dollars and dollar coins will be somewhat haphazardly tossed into that slot as well, then tossed down the safe at a convenient moment to get them out of the way. They're just not used as standard change.

What and the slot normally reserved for dollar bills won't be big enough?

Oh and to reveal my true calling in life - the checks and slips of paper go in the 5th bill slot (anything bigger than a 20 goes under the drawer.). With checks pretty much obsolete now, that slot could be used for the spare coin rolls (and occasionally is).

Just eliminating One Dollar notes would solve this problem lickety split. Giving Americans the option to choose change (no pun intended) or maintain a familiar system no matter how flawed is never going to work. Have we learned nothing from the Metric System?
