Honestly, I thought we were past this.

http://money.cnn.com/2006/11/17/news/companies/playstation_craziness/index.htm?cnn=yes wrote:
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- The debut of Sony's PlayStation 3 game console resulted in reports Friday of disorder outside stores throughout the United States, as well as a robbery attempt in Connecticut that left one man shot and wounded.

Police in Putnam, Conn., said fans resisted two armed men in an attempted robbery outside of a Wal-Mart.

According to Lt. J. Paul Vance of the Connecticut State Police, officers were called to the Wal-Mart at 3:15 a.m. ET after two armed men tried to rob people waiting in line to get the PS3 when the store opened.

Vance told CNNMoney.com that about 15 to 20 people were outside the Wal-Mart (Charts) store when they were confronted by the robbers who demanded money. The lieutenant said one of the men in line was shot after he confronted the armed suspect. The robbers fled the scene after the incident.

Wal-Mart declined to comment on the incident.

In a separate incident, the manager of a 24-hour Wal-Mart supercenter in Palmdale, Calif., shut the store and called the cops after crowds became unruly.

Deputy sheriff Dan McPherson at Palmdale station of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said about 50 to 100 people had gathered outside the store before midnight in the hopes of scoring a PS3.

"We were called after the manager told us that these people were arguing and pushing each other," McPherson said. "We told them they had to leave the premises."

Best Buy (Charts), the No. 1 electronics retailers, saw isolated incidents of unruliness, according to spokesman Justin Barber.

Barber said a Best Buy store in L.A. requested police presence for a midnight opening tied to the PS3 launch.

"Overall we're very happy with how things went. Most of our stores had people waiting in line for a few days," Barber said. As expected, Best Buy sold out of the system in under an hour at most of its 800 locations.

In an email to CNNMoney.com, Circuit City (Charts) spokesman Jim Babb said the retailer was told that groups of people waiting in line at some of its stores in Eugene, Oregon were robbed and police were called to those locations.

"As far as I know, there were no injuries. There were some scattered arguments about line-breaking, and police responded to crowd control issues at a few of our stores," Babb said.

Well I wouldn't have shot the ******* if he would have just given me his money. What a dumbass. My hairdresser was also waiting in that line for over 24 hours; she didn't get a PS3.

For the record, Vance is a prick. So is most of Troop D.

This week, iSuppli conducted a similar cost-analysis study of the PlayStation 3--with even more shocking results. According to the study, the hardware for the 20-gigabyte PS3 costs $805.85 alone--$306.85 more than the stated list price of $499. The 60GB model hardware costs $840.35, $241.35 more than the $599 sticker price Sony announced at the Electronic Entertainment Expo earlier this year. (Note: Sony did not announce price points of $499.99 and $599.99 at E3, although some retailers list the consoles' prices as such.)

Of course, they'll make it up on the software end.

I'd imagine that price tag would be if they only made and distributed one PS3. Buying in bulk saves them the money and makes them profit.

I still don't see the alure of a PS3 other than as an e-bay resale during the first 3 days ploy. I mean seriously, either of my computers can and do outprocess the thing, and all the games I'm going to play are ont he PC anyways. If they started releasing all games for the PC as well, the playstation III would cease to exist as a marketable object.

I actually have a 360. I'm not in a hurry to dump another grand into a system that basically plays the same games with a different colored controller.

I was just shocked at the lack of PS3 threads, giving that every news agency thinks it's bigger than WWII.

ISuppli's table of costs for parts can be found here. At only $125 for a Sony Blu-Ray drive, I think they are calculating for bulk purchases. Those retail for over $750 and I doubt its a $625+ mark up on them.

It wouldn't be the first time Sony (or any other company for that matter) sold hardware at a loss to make their money on the software or other replenishables. Look at printers, most companies make little if any money off the printer itself. The money is made off the huge mark up on the inks.

The truly annoying thing is that there really is a $625 markup on those drives. They are still considered early adopter technology, and given the enourmous cost overruns that the blue ray development process took, they are trying to bilk that back from consumers using the logic of "well they'll pay $500 for a graphics card, why not $600 for a DVD player?" it's a stupid argument, and the industry is setting itself up for lawsuits if they keep it up. Plus these people are pricing themselves out of the market they are hopeing to enter. Even high end computer enthusiasts only have so much money to throw at a system, and i'll be damned if i pay $600 for a DVD drive that only cost a manufacturer $50 worth of parts to produce in the first place.

Here a link to a break down of the costs of the PS3. I think the iSuppli study did infact factor in build discounts, they also list the breakdowns on the cost decreases on producing the Xbox 360

---------------------------------------------------------------------

im an after the hype type of buyer. i will upgrade my kids PS2 after the PS3 is down to 200 dollars.....in a couple years......and the games are 29 and 39 bucks instead of 59 and 69 bucks. my kids will never know the differance.

grats. it takes millions of people like you to keep gaming industries pumping out the latest and greatest so millions of people like me can spend half as much money for the same system.

everyone wins.
