Paper or Plastic...or Corn?Follow

Saw a news report the other night about plastic made from corn. Then found this article. Plus it's a slow day here.

Smithsonian Magazine article

Quote:
The resin, known as polylactic acid (PLA), will be formed into containers and packaging for food and consumer goods. The trendy plastic has several things going for it. It’s made from a renewable resource, which means it has a big leg up—both politically and environmentally—on conventional plastic packaging, which uses an estimated 200,000 barrels of oil a day in the United States. Also, PLA is in principle compostable, meaning that it will break down under certain conditions into harmless natural compounds. That could take pressure off the nation’s mounting landfills, since plastics already take up 25 percent of dumps by volume. And corn-based plastics are starting to look cheap, now that oil prices are so high.

Quote:
Eric Lombardi, president of the Grassroots Recycling Network and a leader in the international Zero Waste movement, takes a nuanced view of PLA’s progress. He says it’s “visionary” even to think about biologically based plastic instead of a petroleum-based one. True, he says, there are problems with PLA, “but let’s not kill the good in pursuit of the perfect.” He suggests that the difficulty disposing of PLA reflects a larger deficiency in how we handle trash. He’s calling for a composting revolution. “We need a convenient, creative collection system with three bins: one for biodegradables, which we’ll compost, one for recycling, and one for whatever’s left.”

Now we just need to shift back to hemp fiber instead of trees to make paper.

Plastic is made from byproducts of gasoline production for which there is some, but limited, demand outside of plastic production. As long as gasoline is produced and consumed, plastics can be produced and consumed without increasing the world's overall Crude Oil consumption. While it is an interesting idea, it will have very limited impact on oil consumption. If they could find a way to economically produce a gasoline wieght volatile organic from corn, then we would be having an impact, but then popcorn futures would skyrocket.

We're gonna need more corn.

The big boom out here in the Prairie State is ethanol and, once you get past the civilized boundries of the Chicagoland area, you find ethanol plants starting to spring up like dandelions. Of course, all these ethanol plants are going to need raw materials and so people are predicting a boom on corn production.

Corn farming is hard on the soil and so farmers have learned to rotate crops (usually between corn and soy) to give the soil time to refresh in nutrients between corn seasons. One article I read about the ethanol trend had a farmer basically saying "***** planting soy, I'm going to just dump more and more fertilizer every year to keep corn growing. I can't afford not to."

If it's not one thing, it's another I suppose Smiley: oyvey

I heard the Prairie states use Corn Oil in their gas and that it doesn't burn as fast....so why can't all the states do that?

Assuming you mean the Prairie State (Illinois) and not, erm, "a" prairie state then Illinois does mandate a 10% blend of ethanol in the gasoline sold here. It's been that way at least since the energy crunches of the 1970's.
