How long untill he realizes if he wants a shot at the '08 Senate seat he needs to get this over with and not drag Virginians through a legal fight?

I'll go with Noon tommorow.

Now, the who in the what?

You silly people on the otherside of the country, you don't expect anyone in the most important state in the union (California, of course) to know what you are talking about, do you?

I think it will be November 27th, after the counts are signed official, before he makes that choice either way. The stigma of "losing" the senate to the democrats might weigh more heavily than dragging the state through a recount.

So far, I like Flea's prediction best, so I'll second that.

WTF are they doing there in VA? Checking the flash drives for hanging chads?

Yeah, yeah.. I know. Provisional ballots and all. Still... Anyway, the total votes counted keeps increasing but Webb is holding onto a 6,900+ lead.

Going to every precinct looking for "irregularities" I guess. Oh and the Allen people will be slightly more busy talking to the FBI.

That might be time consuming.

Voters in a half-dozen cities and counties across the state reported getting deceptive telephone calls in the days before the election informing them falsely that their voting places had changed, Jensen said.

According to a sworn statement filed with the Board of Elections, a man said he got a phone message from the "Virginia Elections Commission" telling him that he was registered to vote in New York and would be "charged criminally" if he voted in Virginia.

Another man said in an affidavit that he got a call from a woman claiming to be helping Webb. He said the woman gave him an incorrect polling place address after he told her he planned to vote for Webb.

Chris LaCivita, a consultant to the Allen campaign, said the calls did not originate with the GOP. "And it's sure as heck not coming from the Allen campaign," LaCivita said.

The Webb campaign said the calls were intended to confuse and discourage Virginians from voting.

They brought it on themselves, voting for a Dem!

GOP won't concede Virginia
Democrat claims victory in Senate race, but Republican Sen. Allen waiting for full count
Nov. 8, 2006. 02:13 PM
ASSOCIATED PRESS

RICHMOND, Va. — Republican Sen. George Allen refused to concede defeat today, even as Democrat Jim Webb declared victory and began assembling a transition team.

With Republican Sen. Conrad Burns' loss in Montana, the Democrats would gain control of the Senate if Webb's lead holds. The margin between the two Virginia candidates was about 7,000 votes.

"The votes are in and we won," Webb declared. With 99 percent of precincts reporting, Webb had 1,169,285 votes, or 49.6 percent, to Allen's 1,162,577, or 49.3 percent.

Allen's campaign, however, said the Senator would wait for a full review of the Virginia vote.

"The conclusion of the canvass will be the final official results," said Ed Gillespie, the former Republican National Committee chairman and adviser to Allen.

I wonder how it feels to live in a state that is divided right down the middle politically. It's almost like they should draw a line in the sand and divide up on their beliefs. Maybe they'd be happier that way.

The 6,900+ vote lead had turned into a 7,200+ vote lead.

I guess they'll keep counting and recounting until the bitter end but... nah, it's over. I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop but I think my pessimistic side is going to lose this fight.

That's a lot of sour grapes. Gillespie won't let it go that long. Friday at the latest it'll be over.

Victory or not for the Dems, this and many of the other elections yesterday were testimony to the fact that no matter how much "anti-bush" sentiment has trickled into moderate mainstream America, while clearly voting for change, still remains somewhat divided as it's been for the last 6 years.
Divided how? There were 13 open Senate seats last night. Eleven of them went to Democrats & Independents. The Republicans only held onto two. The Republicans lost six seats and gained none.

I'm not saying this signifies a major sweeping wave of liberalism over the land but the Senate vote was in no way "somewhat divided". It was a major lopsided victory for the Democrats; one even larger than most people predicted or hoped for.

I doubt anyone really expects a radical left turn in the national zeitgeist. While this election undoubtedly shifted the political power leftward, it's actually moved to the center, not the left and certainly not to the far left.

Lots of seats were lost to conservative Demos. Moderate Pubbies seem to have done all right. No hawkish red states suddenly decided they were all about peace, love and plowshares.

They just got sick of the neo-con lies and corruption.

So, kinda like the Demos in the last election, a lot of Pubbies appear to have voted against the status quo instead of for the newly elected pols. When conservatives vote against the status quo, you know they're seriously fed up.

True, but they were Republican-held anyway. Montana and Virginia weren't even expected to be in play until a month or two ago. The mere fact that it was close would have been a coup for Democrats even if they'd lost. They fact that they overcame it to take the states really says something.

No one but no one was expecting easy Dem wins in MT, VA or MO.

Well I meant to say that while it was a great victory for the dems, some of the key elections (Montana, Missouri and ultimatley Virginia, among others) still came down to the wire with the dems winning with small margins.

Right, and in Pensylvannia they unseated someone in the leadership by almost 20 points.

Is your point that Montana's not going to pass gun controll or something?
