I hate how the war is being handled I think we need to be there though. I think we went about it all wrong.

I still hold to that I want a government that is going to:

1. Increase funding for schools

2. Increase funding for military, enough with this "stream lining" crap!

3. Reform welfare. I'm so tired of everyone looking for hand outs!
- I hate those women who breed just for the pay checks

4. Keep us in Iraq!

5. Push for a alternative fuels! I want us to quit being slaves to OIL!

Iraq is a quagmire. It is so because of repeated failures of the Bush adminstration. Whether it is them underestimating the situation, Bremers decision to disband the Republican Guard rather than integrate it into a police force, the inability of the adminstration to understand how the muslim world might possibly view the 'liberation' of Iraq as a negative thing etc.

Right now you have a US force that is completely incapable of defending its allies. A Iraqi gov't that must pander to people like al-Sadr.

Much like my signature quoting Hans Blix states there isn't much that the United States can do by staying there. Brute force isn't going to solve the problem. However if they do leave it more than likely that things will slide out of control and the insurgency will win and a terrorist haven much like Afghanistan under the Taliban will arise.

What is to be done?

Who knows? The first step is to recognizing that at almost every step of the process the current administration has f'ucked up. That now is a critical moment. That it is time too ditch the Bush administrations myopic approach and look for a workable solution.

Personally I think a complete and utter withdrawal is as much a mistake as 'staying the course'. I also think it was clear that Bush and Rumsfeld were obviously notequipped to adequately handle the situation and hopefully they will be willing to tackle it in a new way.

Any chance any of you guys want to volunteer to "breed it out of them"? No? Ah well, it was a thought.

I think we need to stay. I think we need to stay a really LONG time. I'm talking having a presence there for many generations to come. I think if we stay there long enough, the younger generations will become more "American" and our issues will solve themselves.

Wow Katie, could you be a little more ethnocentric? I'm lately of the notion that most of the rest of the world would be better off if the US didn't exist.

How many years did Israel occupy Southern Lebanon before they left in 2000?

A long military presence in no way will ensure the americanization of Iraq. Buidling a Disneyland might though.

Hey, I never said it would be a popular idea. You know it's true though. You are right, if we'd never gone over there in the first place (not talking about after 9/11) maybe things would be different. Sadly, they are the way they are because we had a nice big helping hand. Now, if we leave its just going to escalate. What do we do? We stay and do just what I said.

If we can just get our troops to impregnate all three groups equally and maybe castrate all the men, we'll be in good shape. Worked in Rowanda.

Many Arabs are westernized in their speech, leisure activities, and attitudes towards consumerism, marriage and sex. HOWEVER, this doesn't mean that they would, in a conflict, let that mindset prevail over a more traditional one. In times of crisis, people almost always fall back on the tried and true. Although I think an immediate and complete withdrawal isn't workable, I also don't think that a long-term presence would do anything but sustain an untenable situation. The thing to do is to start taking cautious and forwarned steps out, and to quit treating the Iraqi government as our viceroys and give it the equal standing it deserves.

I compare it to racism here in the US. While yes, there are places it still goes on heavily, for the most part through the generations it has lessened considerably. We taught our children to be tolerant, who taught their children and with each passing generation it gets less and less of an issue. I think we could apply the same ideals to Iraq.

Well you do have to live in his home state, I guess.

Rummy going away is just the candle on the icing of the cake that represents the last 24 hours. Webb winning will be little colorful choccie sprinkles, and maybe a decorative frosting flourish.

I'm bouncing. I'm giggling. I'm wearing my happy face. If I could drink, I'd be having a beer right now. Or ten.
