while it may look like a good idea to the masses, it pretty much guarentees there will be no changes to the constitution. the bad part about that is that when the constitution was written, there was no way to predict circumstances that pop up in which it may not cover.

and, like the california wildfire situation that stripped you of your property rights under immenent domain, this one is also a wolf in sheeps clothing, sold to you under false pretense.

abortion.

the florida constitution does not garentee you the right to an abortion. and before legislation can be imposed that restricts or eliminates abortion in this very liberal state, they had to make sure no simple majority would undermine it by giving you freedom of choice in the constitution.

when you see stuff like this on the ballot, you really have to look at who it will benifit and how. legislators can write laws that will get passed with a friendly executive branch (govenor)without YOUR approval. YOUR check to that balance of power was the constitution and the simple majority necessary to protect YOU from your own government.

and while you are dismissing this as dooms day talk, remember, the same thing was said about the california wildfire bill that stripped YOU of any say in how YOUR public land was managed. the masses downplayed the doom and gllom warnings then too, now 17 states, including Florida, have casses before the supreme court form people fighting to keep YOUR government from TAKING YOUR private property and selling it to a for profit private bussiness.

you think they went to all that trouble to put this on the ballot for.......YOU? then whitewash it so it sounds so benign you wonder why it was there to begine with? with a few "bring on the fear" slogans like "protect your constitution from lobbiest..." crap paid for by.......lobbiest?

baaaa baaaaa baaaaa

just a bunch of sheep, the lot of you. the origonal poster was right in raising the warning flag. just to bad the majority of you sheep wont pay any heed untill it is too late. you saw that it will protect you on TV in an add paid for by lobbiest, so it must be true....right?

Hrm? Changing the US Constitution is much more involved than simply getting 60% of the public vote and we've managed to change that many a time when circumstances warranted.

If only 51% of the public agrees to something, that seems too thin a margin to me to be changing the most powerful legal document in the state. The change guarentees that the state constitution won't be casually changed and that sounds like a good idea to me.

here is the problem. the majority of the people in florida live in the southern portion, broward county and below. over half. however, the majority of counties in florida are republican by a large margin.

the result is a republican controlled legislature representing the smaller percentage of people.

right now, with only 51 percent of the population needed for a constitutional amendment, democrats couldnt introduce legislature, but....they could counter it in the constitution if neccessary, forcing the right to come to the middle if they ever wanted to get anything done.

with this bill, not only does the right controll the legislature, the minority of people in this state controll the constitution.

now, the right doesnt have to concern itself with the left at all, as long as they dont come in direct conflict with the constitution. right now, the minority controlls the rights the majority live by.

that is NOT how it was intended to work. that is why this is a horrible bill. Florida is now a majority democratic state population wise, controlled by the minority rebuplican machine. that is why so much effort was spent redrawing the districts to ensure republicans will keep the legislature.

Amending the friggin' state constitution every time you don't get your way is as excellent an argument as any for requiring a super-majority.

I'm a big fan of the concept of representative democracy over majority rule myself. The people don't always know what's best for themselves. It is the duty of our representatives to not only know what the people want, but also to know when what we want is not good for us.

It is also the duty of our representatives to protect minorities and individuals from having rights taken away by the majority. Majority rule is a bad thing. Half of the bill of rights wouldn't exist if the majority ruled.

50% +1 to change the state constitution was majority rule, and that's not good. 60% +1 is still majority rule, but at least it's less likely for a small majority to squash the rights of minorities and individuals now. I'd be happier if they did away with that altogether.

1 point i failed to mention in my OP about this BS, is this "law" won with ONLY 57%, so not even enough of a margin to win by its OWN STANDERS...

this is bad for FL, very bad.

FYI, changing a state constitution is NOTHING like changing the US Constitution. please do not compare them.

I hate to be the one to tell you this, shadowrelm, but Floridians generally love Bush. Jeb Bush, that is. The man has done a remarkable job in a very contentious state-- and yes, that includes areas like Broward County, Miami, and Palm Beach.

But don't let truth and facts get in the way of your opinions there, son.
