Dems take House, not SenateFollow

Senate could be a 50/50 split which would mean its a Republican Senate because Cheney is the tie breaker.

Full Story
Quote:
(CNN) -- Democrats will take control of the House of Representatives for the first time since the 1994 Republican revolution, while control of the Senate hangs in the balance, CNN projects.

Democratic challengers have picked up four seats in the Senate, CNN projects. Republicans would need to take just one of the two remaining competitive races to keep control of the chamber. Results are still too close to call in Montana and Virginia.

In Montana, Republican Sen. Conrad Burns was running behind his Democratic challenger, state Sen. John Tester.

If Tester wins, Democrats could secure Senate control by winning in Virginia, where embattled Republican Sen. George Allen trailed his Democratic challenger, Jim Webb, by fewer than 6,000 votes out of more than 2.3 million counted. (Full Senate news)

Under Virginia law, the apparent loser can request a recount after the votes have been certified if the margin is less than 1 percent of the total votes cast. If that happens, the result may not be clear for weeks.

Webb declared victory early Wednesday, saying, "The votes are in, and we won."

But Allen wasn't backing down. "The election continues," he said.

If the parties split the Virginia and Montana races, that would create a 50-50 breakdown in the Senate, assuming that the two independent members will caucus with the Democrats. In that event, Vice President **** Cheney's constitutional authority to break tie votes would keep the Senate under Republican leadership. [CONTINUED @ Link}

So, here's the Million Dollar Question: Standard Republican (and even some Democratic) response to the elections was that Democrats did not "win" it so much as the Republicans "lost" it. I was even reading of some Republican (forgot who) off-handedly commending the Democratic "strategy" of not having a strategy, thus keeping the focus on what the Republicans did, not what the Democrats would do.

So how did the Republicans lose? The war? Corruption and scandals? The economy? Immigration? Increased spending & government growth? Moderates turning away from the Religious Right? The Religious Right turning away from moderates?

Threats that a Speaker Pelosi will raise taxes, lose the war, destroy social values and tie down government with investigations proved fruitless. So why did the Republicans lose?

Oh! Oh oh oh! I know this one!

It's because the other people got more votes.

Dems could take the Senate too.

Currently 49 Democrats and 49 Republicans with 2 states undecided.
Montana 48.3% to Burns (R) 49.1% Tester (D)
Virginia 49.3% Allen (R) 49.6% Webb (D)

The dems kept quiet, as you mentioned.

The Republicans spent the last two years strangling themselves.

-Dubai port deals
-Foley
-Abramoff/Scanlon lobbying scandal
-Tom Delay
-trying to appoint Miers to Scotus
-Failure with Katrina
-appointing friend to Fema head who was not qualified
-Iraq getting better not worse
-failure to deal effectively with Iran or DKRP.

Any or all of these have lead to growing dissapproval. Teamed with the fact that Republicans have controlled government for long enough now that they can no longer blame the problems on Clinton and have anyone buy it.

Contrary to Republican theorists, people just don't like boy fuckers. Considering it's common knowledge that the central plank of the GOP is pederasty, it's no surprise Independent voters broke 2 to 1 for one party for the first time ever.

Wait, that must be wrong. Gbaji told me Independent voters loved the war and were angry at Kerry. Angry, ********

From what I was hearing from CNN insofar as the exit polls last night, the answer for those two in particular would be: "Yes."

It seems that the republicans I've heard were focusing on the phrase "We have to have the will to win in Iraq" now. It almost feels like they already know they're screwed after the recounts come in.

So, if the dems do manage to pull majority control of the legislative branch, do you think they will be able to "step up to the plate", so to speak, insofar as making the country actually run instead of getting bogged down and beat over the head with politics and scandals?

I also remember constant talk that this would be a local vote and that on election night it would be a vote for support of their Congress-critters, not a referendum on Bush.

I think the GOP really blew it on that one. Voters were upset enough at the Republican control to set up a Democratic hedge against the president. I get the impression that people were thinking that total Republican control was increasingly dangerous.

Since, uh... Well, since 2000, as a matter of fact, when this douchebrain president got elected.

Yeah, I think Pelosi and Bush will be able to work together and will play hopscotch in the White House rose garden every Tuesday.

The GOP "Sure we burned your house down and killed your family, but what's *their* solution to raising the dead? They have no plan!" was really wearing a little thing.

It'll be red wine, but I have been known to drink gin. Usually just with the elderly though, haha.
