As in "Madam Speaker, Mr. Waxman has prepared the subpoenas."

See Also "Madam Speaker Mr. Rangel has cut off funding for abstinence only sex education."

Close to none, I'm guessing.

Virginia is still close but MO and TN don't look good for Team Blue.

In live Daily Show news, on the subject of Mrs. Clinton's landslide victory:

I may have heard differently.

Nah, The Senate's fairly meaningless though. It's not as if gaining control of the Senate would have accomplished that much with a GOP president.

The house was far far more important.

Democrats wouldn't have been able to get any legislation through regardless, but having the house means having subpoena power which means hearings about the war, and the seekrit energy policy meetings etc. etc.

If the Dems can just find a nice mild mannered white southern guy to nominate for '08 we'll be in good shape.

/shrug.

Stephens can make it two more years.

If given the choice of winning the Senate or the House, I'd take the House every time.

I find it interesting that most of the turnovers (read: Dems beating incubent Repubs) were by moderate/conservative Dems. I think the country is tired of extremists.

So has this thread become the "Woooo, first female Speaker in the History of the U.S., a monumental achievement!" thread or the "Woooo, Democrats have the House thread!"

Either one works for me.

I don't.

You don't attack seats in very conservative districts gerrymandered into serpent like shapes to get all the slack jawed yokels together in the polling place by nominating very liberal candidates.

Yeah I am celebrating. I hit 3 for 3 tonight too. Voted for Casey over that rat Santorum, Sestak over that crook Weldon, and Rendell over the nice, but not ready for politics, Swann. I just hope the Democrats just use their new found power to thwart Bush and not to try to impeach him. Not that he probably doesn't deserve it, but I prefer to see them try to actually accomplish something or at least stop Bush from ******** everything up, and not just strike back at Bush.

Pop the cork! Maybe sanity has returned again to the U.S. government.

Zam, do you really feel that several seats in congress really will make sanity return to US government?

(Not that it won't HELP, but I honestly don't expect a huge change.)

No argument there. Just pointing it out.

In Virgina news, it looks like Independent party candidate Parker might be losing the race for Webb. Webb is down by 6k, with Parker taking 25k votes. I dunno how many more votes are left to count though.

We won't know the results there for days I suspect.

If the stars aligned perfectly, the Senate is still in play but I'd say there's about a 5% chance of that happening.

Race still matters in this country, as much as people would like to cover their eyes and pretend it doesn't, and I think Ford's done in 10se because voters there just won't elect a black man to the Senate.

Which is a shame, because with him and Obama on the Dems basketball team, they'd never lose.

OF all places, FoxNews just told me that the Senate is still very much in play.

Tomorrow might be a really good day.

Nah. Don't get me wrong, if I wake up tomorrow and find out it's 51/49 or even 50/50, I'll be tickled pink. But I don't see that happening.

Speaking of conservative sources, it was nice to see the fellow who runs Election Projection appropriately humbled.

What'dyaknow? George W. Bush has suddenly become a great uniter!
Reuters wrote:
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President George W. Bush, disappointed at the Democrats' seizure of the House of Representatives, will hold a news conference on Wednesday to urge his opponents to work with him, the White House said.
[...]
White House spokesman Tony Snow said the outcome of the elections, in which Democrats were projected to win control of the House and pick up several Senate seats, was "not what we would've hoped."

"But it also gets us to a point: Democrats have spent a lot of time complaining about what the president has done. This is an opportunity for them to kind of stand up," Snow said.

Edit: And right now, George Webb is suddenly up by 3,000 votes. 95% of the precincts reporting but I guess the votes from Fairfax county are just coming in now and it's reported to be Webb country there.

No, me either, but I'm more hopeful when Bill Krystol tells me it's more likely than not.

Virginia looks to be a big mess.

If the Democratic rumor mill is correct, Macaskill has Missouri locked up and Tester is in good shape.

It could very well be 50 Dem 49 GOP tomorrow morning and the Virginia recount deciding the control of the Senate.

That would be fun to watch, but someone owes me a dinner if the Dems take the Senate so I'd prefer it gets settled faster than that.

It looks like control of the Senate will come down to Virginia. And, ironically enough, once again, the green party may well be the difference between electing an enviromentally friendly democratic majority and a kill the trees and drill for oil Republican majority. 25,000 people voted green instead of Democrat, which may well swing the Virginia Senate election, and thus the entire U.S. Senate to the Republicans, and cause just the opposite effect of what they thought they were voting for. These are the same people who voted for Ralph Nader in the last presidential election and swung Ohio and Florida to the Replubicans. So, how's that working out for you folks?

When will the Green party realize that their biggest political donors are all hard core right wing activists? In PA, the Republicans tried desparately to get the green party candidate on the Senate ballot. They contributed to his campaign, collected signatures for him, and filled out all his paper work. Unfortunately, they were a little too enthusiastic and managed to get the same people to sign over and over again, so it got thrown out. Then, the Republican party -- not the green party -- challeneged it in court. How obvious is that? For people who try to pretend they are so politically savvy, green party people are some of the dumbest people in American politics.
