The idea that it's inherently hypocritical to be gay and also oppose gay marriage is the core issue.
Even more core is that it's inherently hypocritical to oppose homosexuality and engage in homosexal acts with a male prostitute.

Haggard, who as president of the National Association of Evangelicals wielded influence on Capitol Hill and condemned both gay marriage and homosexuality, resigned on Thursday after a Denver man named Mike Jones claimed that he had many drug-fueled trysts with Haggard.

That's nice. But that's *not* the stated "hypocrisy" that caused the guy in question to come forward:
Quote:
Jones said he decided to go public because he was also upset when he discovered Haggard and the New Life Church had publicly opposed same-sex marriage.
"It made me angry that here's someone preaching about gay marriage and going behind the scenes having gay sex," he said.
"I just want people to step back and take a look and say, 'Look, we're all sinners, we all have faults, but if two people want to get married, just let them, and let them have a happy life,'" said Jones, who added that he isn't working for any political group.
I think the fellows motivation on this is pretty clear, don't you? Whether or not it's *also* hypocritical to oppose homosexuality in general while having gay sex with someone is beside the point. In this case, the person who came forward with this information was specifically upset over the gay marriage issue (and apparently only coincidentally reveals this information 6 days before the elections).
Haggard has also only admitted to having purchased drugs from the man. Not to any sexual activity. Can't say how much I believe that either, but at this point, the allegations that he was having a homosexual affair with this guy are just that: allegations. Easy to make. Conveniently impossible to debunk between now and election day...
