The federal government's "no sex without marriage" message isn't just for kids anymore.

Now the government is targeting unmarried adults up to age 29 as part of its abstinence-only programs, which include millions of dollars in federal money that will be available to the states under revised federal grant guidelines for 2007.

The government says the change is a clarification. But critics say it's a clear signal of a more directed policy targeting the sexual behavior of adults.

"They've stepped over the line of common sense," said James Wagoner, president of Advocates for Youth, a Washington, D.C.-based non-profit that supports sex education. "To be preaching abstinence when 90% of people are having sex is in essence to lose touch with reality. It's an ideological campaign. It has nothing to do with public health."

Abstinence education programs, which have focused on preteens and teens, teach that abstaining from sex is the only effective or acceptable method to prevent pregnancy or disease. They give no instruction on birth control or safe sex.

You tax dollars at work telling adults in their 20's not to have sex until they're married. Not to practice safe sex or educate them about birth control, but to spend money telling 25 year olds not to have sex and realistically expecting a result from that.
Quote:
Last year, 46 states applied for the federal abstinence-education money, to fund programs in schools, neighborhood clubs and faith-based organizations.
I'm guessing it's not the high schools and 4-H clubs reaching out to these adults either.

It will probably just lead to a decrease in vaginal sex and an increase in oral and **** sex, for those in their 20s, just like the programs for* the teens did a few years back.

Good old USA today leaves out the little bit that they're also COMPLETELY INEFFECTIVE in every study ever done.

Oh well. God loves **** I guess.

I'm just curious when exactly he thinks would be a good time to teach abstinence...

Never! Teach protection, teach safe sex, teach birth control. Teach these stupid children that diseases can be spread orally as well!

Maybe when there's a shred of evidence to prove that teaching abstinence is actually effective at *gasp* promoting abstinence.

Study after study after study after f'ucking study has demonstrated that NOT ONLY are abstinence-only programs totally failing at convincing kids to abstain, but they're increasing the risk to the kids, because when the kids DO have sex, they are far less likely to use protection, or to use it incorrectly.

How do you salvage a wholly ineffective program? Oh, sure, throw more money at it, so it can be ineffective on a LARGER SCALE.

But, oh wait, I forgot. It's not about preventing unplanned pregnancy and/or disease. It's about taking a moral stand. How nice that the right thinks it's perfectly acceptable to endanger lives so they can pat themselves on the back for being righteous.

RACK that, Katie. Too many kids think that a condom will protect them from anything out there, when in some cases, even skin-to-skin contact is enough to infect someone else. Much like driving a car or flying on a jet, what are you supposed to do? Lock yourself in a closet and hope no one opens the door? The best thing you can do for anyone is arm them with the knowledge they need to make their own informed, intelligent choice. It's not that I object to abstinence being taught, it's when it's taught as THE ONLY option that I get ticked.

As and aside-Didn't we have a poster a while back that used to argue about abstinence and then finally turned into some raging panting beast that was talking about how to force his girlfriend to have sex with him? Who was that guy?

Wasn't that Zadiel or something? Went from abstinence-preaching conservative to bisexual sex-monkey within a two month span.

Was that the guy that bragged about how faithful he is to both his girlfriends? And turned out to not be joking?

Nah, I'm married (in other words, abstinent.)

Hey, maybe the Pubes are onto something here. Make everyone get married, and suddenly abstinence WILL become the norm.

Oh, nm, they want abstinence BEFORE marriage, not after. My bad.

Suck to be in your marriage then. I have a feeling all the people pushing for this crap are just as unhappy as you and look upon people like myself as free-loving hippy heathens.
