So I posted this in the tech support forum, but nobody has replied and it's been over an hour so ***** it. Besides, I don't want just random people's opinions, I want random people I pseudo-know opinions.

I'm looking to upgrade my video card. I currently have a PCI-E ATI Radeon 9600, and I get a lot of errors and a bit of lag running on Halflife 2 and Oblivion. I'm looking for a card that will handle Vanguard when it comes out. I've always used ATI cards in the past, but I'm willing to go nVidia or geforce if they are better. I'm guessing I'll probably need 512meg on-board RAM for the future.

As far as the rest of the system specs, it won't matter much as I'll eventually end up building a new system and using this new video card for it. But my current system has a 2.2ghz AMD processor, 1.5gig of RAM, and a 160gig hard drive. Not great, but still works for now.

Any recommendations?

Yes. It's just not quite the same as having someone else do it.

You're going to want some serious power if you want to run Oblivion, Vanguard, etc. on high specs. I recommend any of the Radeon X1K series, preferably 1300+. I have a 1900XTX (w/ 512 MB RAM) that's absolutely beautiful, but I was able to get it for cheap ($300) due to my local CompUSA closing and marking everything way down. Normally it would cost much, much more than that. But it's still pretty.

I would also make sure that your power supply can handle whatever you purchase. Make damn sure that you check how much wattage is recommended for what you get. The last thing you want is to have your computer constantly shutting off and rebooting on its own because the power supply can't handle what you're giving it.

The nvidia 7950's are out now too. Dual core, 1.0 gb ram spread over 2 cores (512mb each core)

Are you sure you have a pci express radeon 9600? I'm nearly 100% certain that there is no such thing as a PCI express 9600 card. The earliest PCI express ati card was the X600. If it was one of the short lived pci-Enhanced (not express) card slots, you are screwed.

The current generation Nvidia cards are leading ATI at this point, but that will likely change in about 2 months until Nvidia releases the first of the 8k series cards.

Thanks for pointing that out, I'll have to check on that. I thought it was but it's been 2 years since I put it together, so I could be wrong.

Sexy card, but why does it have 2x HDMI and 1 SVideo, but no VGA output? Smiley: confused Is this thing supposed to use an HDTV as a monitor?

I think it's more that it's a lot easier to convert to VGA with an adapter than vice versa. They do include one.
