Ive had this discussion with others before, and Im sure we've had it here too but thought Id drudge it up again in light of the holiday season. A question was posed on the radio the other day on when is it too old to trick or treat? Is the tradition of gathering candy as youre dressed up only for young kids? Do you wince when you see older kids walk up to your house at night dressed up looking for sweets?

My own personal thought is that if you have taken the time to create a cool costume and can walk out from house to house, usually up here in the driving rain, then you deserve a piece of candy. Maybe once youve hit the older age in the teens enough might be enough, but generally I dont mind passing out sweets if you are actually noticably participating. What I do take offense to, is the older kids who come out and dont even bother trying to dress up. I have been known to question a person obviously lacking in costume what theyre supposed to be and have also been known to tell those older kids who show up in jeans and a shirt to come back when theyve finished putting their costume on.

Does anyone else have guidelines?

Also, for you parents going out with your little ones, so you also take the time to dress up or just think of it as a kids holiday and leave it at that?

I trick or treated until I was about 8, then I just took my sister out. When I was 10 or 11ish, I started trick or treating for UNICEF and I did that for several years. I think once kids get to 11 or 12, collecting for UNICEF is a great idea, and they still toss you some candy usually, haha.

If at the end of a three hour romp around the neighborhood you find you got less candy than you could have bought with one hours pay, you're probably too old.

Getting my costume on now. =(

It depends on how mature the kid is and looks.

You are too old when you think you are too old. If you love the holiday and go out of your way to get a costume, then hell, you get candy. It's supposed to be a fun holiday, shouldn't be a "you have to be this tall" sign.

On the other hands, a white t-shirt and fake blood splattered on your face will probably get you as far as a bruised knuckle from knocking a door that was opening before but seems to not like you now.

I mean, seriously. That's just lame.

I think junior high is as old as you should go. Once you have bewbs and you sprout chin fuzz (hopefully not both at once), you're too old.

I refuse to give any candy to anyone dressed in their PJ's or as a 'bum'. *****, please.

Me and my friends used to hit the same set of houses 2-3 times. We'd all put on one mask and go down the street. At the end we'd switch masks and go back and hit all the good houses. Double the candy for less effort.

I'm not too old! I'm going trick-or-treating as soon as it starts to get dark!

Mind you I'm escorting my 4 kids, but the details are not important.

You are too old to trick-or-treat at the same age you are too old for an Easter Egg hunt. By then your main interests on the 31st should involve raw eggs, toilet paper, firecrackers, and paper bags filled with dog ****. For me this was about 11.

The last time I dressed up and went trick or treating was when I was a senior in high school and I decided then that it would be my last year because I felt I was too old. I borrowed my dad's Halloween biker wig and dressed all in black with the hair all in my face to be Cousin It. I went up and down the streets with my friend scaring the little kids by walking up to them going MEEE MEEE MEE MEE MEE. At the doors I said MIP MOR MEEP. Most people didn't know wtf I was supposed to be. I think anyone under college age that dresses up in a costume is fine for trick or treating.

I think I'm going trick or treating with my cousin and her 1 year old tonight. I don't have a costume, but I heard from my aunty this morning that my cuz is going as a tree and her son is a monkey, so now I feel bad. My little boy will be a bat, so maybe I should run out and buy a vampire costume or something.

Just wear something black and powder your face white and stuff. Or if you want, be a giant peach or something, and he can be a fruit bat. What's your princess going as?

She's going as a University of Hawaii Cheerleader. We took her to the homecoming game last Saturday and since the little cheerleader outfit that we couldn't resist buying was 50 freakin dollars, by default she is a cheerleader for Halloween. I went to Price Busters and bought her some pompoms that light up, which she loves. We were trying to teach her to say Trick or Treat! last night.

I told her this morning that today is Halloween and I asked her what she says when she wants candy tonight and she yelled at me, TOUCHDOWN!!! It was sooo hilarious. We were trying all last week to get her to say that for the game, but she refused. And now when it's supposed to be Trick or Treat, she says Touchdown! But it fit anyway, so I loved it!

My last year trick or treating was in the 6th grade. When my buddy and I went up to a house, the girl giving out the candy was in our class. She recognized us and said "Aren't you guys getting a little old for this?"

So basically when the people handing out the candy are the same age as you, that's a good indication.

I quit in middle school. After that I had more fun handing out the candy.

Once you are old enough to egg and shaving cream cover each other, you can buy your own candy. Unless of course, you have boobs, then you can get candy anytime you want, it need not even be Halloween.

Smiley: laugh I stopped at around 10, right when my bewbs just got a tad too noticeable. But there was always some kind of get together or party for that night so it wasn't missed.

I hit a growth spurt when I was 11 and jumped up to 6'3."

I still continued TorTing until I was in my last year of middle school. I got some funny looks walking with my shorter 5' friends.

"Parents aren't supposed to ask for candy too." Smiley: frown
