If you like Leonard Cohen AND female vocalists, I'm sure you've already checked out Madeleine Peyroux.

You might like Bettie Serveert. I think they've actually been around a while, but I recently discovered them and they have an album that just came out last month.

Of course, me liking mellow chicks with acoustic guitars isn't exactly shattering any conventions.

I'll start working my way through page 1 later tonight.

I second the meh on the new Chili Peppers album. They all sound the same and don't really have any of the good stuff that's on Californication. (which is my 2 year old daughter's favorite cd......)

On the other hand, I saw them live about a week ago, and the show was amazing. If they're heading to anyone's area, pick up tickets ASAP.

True, I thought of that after I posted Smiley: laugh

If you do want to check out Arrested Development even though they are hip-hop, check out their home page. They have one of those annoying little players at the bottom of the page that starts up when the page loads. Even though I said I wouldn't recommend any particular tracks, "Miracles & It's Time" is on the player and it is a good representation of their new stuff.

This is most likely not the hip-hop you are used to, but if you don't like the style at all you probably won't like this either.

Since I really only listen to hip-hop and "mellow chicks with acoustic guitars," I can't really suggest much else. I would be interested in some mellow chicks with guitars suggestions though.

Wow Arrested Development is still around? That's pretty impressive longevity. I still remember Mr. Wendel.

Are you familiar with Rachael Yamagata? She's my stock answer for those queries. Well, she's guitar and piano. Close 'nuff.

I can't reccomend Ernest Ranglin enough. Especially his album "Below the Bassline". It's instrumental jazz, but incredibly melodic, great rythms and solos, and full of life. In the eternal words of Steven Tyler, it's amazing. Espceially if you smoke pot, but not only. Give it a listen, you won't be disappointed, and it gets better with every listen as you pick-up on all the subtelties of this great musician.

In another genre, and not soo new, Fela Kuti is incredibly cool too. He is know as the "Nigerian Bob marley", eventhough he doesnt really sound like Bob Marley at all. But he is Nigerian. So 50% right, I guess. Great lyrics, great beats, great rythms, it's fUcking insane. Best thing to come out of Africa since mankind. And even that was a tad overrated. Songs like Zombie (about the military in Africa), and Shakara are good to start with. But it is truelly incredible music, and much better than what his son has done, Femi Kuti.

In another, more modern genre, and if you want to get down with the British kids, why not try the Arctic Monkeys? It's the latest sensationj in Indie/Alternative Rock. They're from Sheffield, hence the cute accent. Cool lyrics, about everyday british life in Sheffield, and decent tunes. I'm sure you've heard "I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor" at least once before, but "When the Sun goes down" and "Mardy Bum" are even betetr I think.

That's my top three of today!

ok i am going to butt into this convo about music and make some recomendations.
anyway, there is a ton of amazing albums out right now in the "indie" (if you wanted to give it a label) community that i think a wide range of people can get into. here is some of my top reccomendations:

1. the evangelicals: so gone (smart pop music for smart people)

2. yo la tengo: we are not afraid of you and we will beat your *** (best listend to under the influence of, well, whatever.)

3. pelican: australasia (what the metal kids who got hip are listening to)

4. blood brothers: young machettes (for people who finally realized that slipknot is NOT clever, scary, enlightening or interesting but who like their music spazzed)/also see: the locust

5. les savy fav: go forth (clever lyrics and much *** shaking potential)

6. juno: a future lived in past tense (please go out and buy this album. they are amazing. its like listening to that hot lit. major who read all the cool books before they were cool. amazing. AMAZING.)

i could go on and on but i don't want to seem like a pretentious ***. really i just dig music and i hate that most people who know that i play WOW think that all i listen to is slipknot or the insane clown posse. ug.

so let the insults begin....

I wasn't really familiar with Waits until I got into Holly Cole about four years back and noticed that 90% of her songs were written by some Tom Waits guy.

Just because I remembered it: I read an interview with Tom Waits back in the summer, and one of the things he said made me laugh.

"Y'know, I can go into Virgin Records and shop around for music and nobody bothers me, they don't know who I am and, like, that's okay. But when I take a truck full of junk to the city dump, every time someone there will walk up to me and say 'Hey, man, aren't you Tom Waits? I dig your music, man!' I guess the people at the dump are just my people."

I'm a couple years behind due to financial constraints and my aversion to listening to anything in a "lossy" format, but the last few albums that floored me were:

Transatlanticism - Death Cab for Cutie
Minimum-Maximum - Kraftwerk (Worth the money for Radioactivity alone.)
Talkie Walkie - Air (This one took a few times through to sink in. It's really mellow on the surface, but now I would consider it their best to date.)
You Forgot It In People - Broken Social Scene

Good call Samira! I like her more as part of Broken Social Scene. She still tours with them often and plays on about half of their set when she does. From what I've read of your tastes Joph, Feist would be a good bet.

BSS might be a touch harsh for you at times. I'm not sure you'd appreciate the wall of guitar thing that they get into occasionally.

The Feeling, Snow Patrol, Cooks and Massive Attack all have albums out at the moment that might be melodic enough for your AOR ears.

The new album by Embrace is wonderful too.

As for Hip Hop that's listenable, I'm hooked on Sniper and IAM. They're teh Fr3nch (so you're as likely to understand the lyrics just as much as Fiddy Cent's ebonics) but have much more melodic and imaginative back-tracks.

The Feeling??? Hang on, I just puked in my mouth a little. Replace The Feeling with Razorlight and I'm essentially on the same page as the Nob, although I wasn't much of a fan of the new Embrace album. I don't really listen to the radio at all, so I'm not sure if people haven't mentioned Panic At The Disco or Gnarls Barkley because they're overplayed and obvious or they didn't think you'd like them. I think you'd enjoy both.

Straight. **** off and let me post. It's not true, it's all in good fun. Now go away.

Nope. Had never ever heard of him (to my knowledge) until 2 months ago. I knew he's been around for a loong time, but it seemed that the "recent" theme went to the dogs, so I decided to mention itSmiley: twocents
