You know, it's funny you should bring that up. When I called Joph's music taste "emo", he denied it vehemently, saying that if he were emo, he would like "that Amy Lee chick".
I also burst out into loud laughter upon seeing that one video of the whiney emo dude with mascara singing while carrying a casket in the rain or some-such shit.

I have no idea who the fuck that was but it made me appreciate why emo kids get bullied.

Never heard of Blue Rodeo, I know I know Tragically Hip but I'll be damned if I could name a song.

Massive Attack, Mogwai.
Never heard of.

Neil Youngs new CD, the new NIN disc is probably their best effort since downward spiral. He'd probably dig Matthew Good. Arcade of Fire etc.
I'll have to try the Neil Young. I liked NIN's first EP & Pretty Hate Machine but damn near hated Downward Spiral (go figure). Never heard of Matthew Good or Arcade of Fire.

The only new music I've bought in the last year is Pearl Jam's new album and the new Red Hot Chili Peppers album. Everything else I've heard pretty much blows.

But then I'm still clinging to two groups I listened to in the late 80's early 90's, so I guess I'm old too.

The newest non-hiphop I have is Fiona Apple's "Extraordinary Machine" and it is good. It falls barely outside your 1-year restriction though (October 4, 2005) but I'm counting it anyway. I'm going to guess that you already know about this one.

Arrested Development's new album "Since the Last Time" is the bee's knees too but it is probably on your hip-hop hate list.

I'm not going to recommend particular songs because I just don't listen to music that way. I tend to listen to albums in their entirety rather than a single here and a single there.

The Feeling, Snow Patrol, Cooks and Massive Attack all have albums out at the moment that might be melodic enough for your AOR ears.

The new album by Embrace is wonderful too.

As for Hip Hop that's listenable, I'm hooked on Sniper and IAM. They're teh Fr3nch (so you're as likely to understand the lyrics just as much as Fiddy Cent's ebonics) but have much more melodic and imaginative back-tracks.

And my favoUrite listen lately is Caolgero (Best album is called 'Calog3ro')
Again, French lyrics, but musically and melodically awesome. Hints of U2 guitar and coldplay keyboards, but very good nonetheless.

Not sure if any of the above are available on 10" 78rpm Bakelite though.

Tragically Hip - Nautical disaster, them bones, new orleans is swimming, wheat kings, oh here is In View (you tube) off the new album.

Blue Rodeo is just melancholy music. Elderon has a hard on for it. To be fair the lead singer has an amazing voice and the songs stick with ya.

Mogwai is otay, Massive Attack is meh but featured on a lot of stuff. If you dl'ed one of their cd's you would probably know a few of their tunes.

Matthew good is a canadian singer song writer. Not a fan but some seem to like lhim whether its his acoustic stuff like Apparitions or more rock stuff like The Future is X-rated.

Out of them all I would recommend the Hip, Mogwai and possibly Blue Rodeo (just to keep Eldy off my back)

Arcade Fire - Funeral (bodhi recommended it, but got the name wrong)
Beck - The Information (the new album, it's very good)
Guster - Keep it Together
The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots
Pete Yorn - Musicforthemorningafter

If you want to listen to The Tragically Hip, I recommend their album Day for Night.

The newest Chili Peppers is "meh" in my opinion. Some good stuff, but a lot of it feels like filler.

The only "new" music on the above list is the new Beck album, but it's all good. And I think that's what matters. :P

I see Joph as more indie than emo.

I've played both Massive Attack and Pete Yorn for him, but he doesn't seem to get hooked. He hearts him some Tom Petty, though. One of the few male vocalists he likes.

I wear my old-osity like a badge of honor. But that's neither here nor there to my request. If I like something, I like it.

Apparently, you people listen to music that sucks Smiley: laugh

The last CD I bought (3 weeks ago) was Stevie Ray Vaughan's Gratest Hits. Hell lately I have been listening more to Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr. I like the older stuff.

My "music that sucks" comment was directed towards those who'd rather ride my case for asking about new tunes than actually cough up a suggestion Smiley: grin

I get the feeling Joph is a huge Gordon Lighfoot fan.

So I'll reccommend one more, and you can't possibly go wrong with this album, because the entire thing is songs about our great state of Illinois.

It's by Sufjan Stevens and aptly entitled ILLINOISE.

Best of all Joph, it has a song which is sure to warm your heart called Casmir Pulaski Day. Talk about getting Flea up to date on famous Polish people, while you guys drive to IKEA on saturdays!

Come on! Feel the ILLINOISE!

You could always just play it safe and go with some Cat Stevens, everybody like Cat Stevens.

It's funny because I burned that song to a CD this weekend and played it with Flea in the car. While on our way to the Polish Museum of America!

The museum visit was for a class... honest.

I have a mug with Polish eagles on it.

On a side note, that song is beautiful, but depressing as allshit.

I second the meh on the new Chili Peppers album. They all sound the same and don't really have any of the good stuff that's on Californication. (which is my 2 year old daughter's favorite cd......)

Whose wingspan, if I may point it out, dwarfs that of the Polish Eagle.

C'mon now, there must be plenty of music that's been out there for years that will still be new to you.

Anyway.. I'll play fast and loose with The Rule, and nominate Robert Randolph and the Family band. I've only heard one cut off his latest album, but his previous two albums were terrific. He's pretty much the only guy I know of that play's a pedal steel guitar and isn't making whiney noises on sappy country songs with it.
