One of the perks to being the usual driver on family outings is that I control the radio. In fact, my stereo has thumb controls right on the steering wheel so I don't even have to move my hand to veto a song. Apparently, one of the perks to riding shotgun is that you get to complain about the driver's music -- a perk exercised last night by Flea.

Riding along in my automobile, Mlle Flea requested that we listen to the radio rather than my usual wax cylinder recordings of Guy Lombardo. She said that she feared losing relevance or some such and that we'd be missing out on new developments in the aural arts by staying with older music. I pointed out that when I did turn on the radio, I didn't like most of the new stuff anyway and it's a rare thing when a new artist grabs me. Then she called me old.

So, never being one to shirk self-improvement when it takes minimal effort on my part, lay some new tunes on me. Harassing the awesome power of teh intrawebz, I shall listen to them and decide if they suck or not. It'll be magical.

Being the white suburbanite that I am, I'm no fan of rap, hip-hop, metal and the like so it's unlikely that I'll receive any such songs well but if you think it's the bee's knees then go for it. My only rule is that anything volunteered can't be more than one year old since that'd defeat the point of this exercise. Give both artist and title, please and try to keep it to two or three suggestions. I don't have all day.

You said bees knees.

I don't think you're ready for anything harder than Patsy Cline.

So does this mean you're officially one of those old people that trys to be cool?

You need to drop flea and get one of those horny mothers that dress in slutty clothes that fit their fourteen year old daughter, who dresses more modestly.

You can be young again. Hip? Hell no, but young.

I might try to contribute a song or two when I get home. I have to be looking at my list or else I can't think of anything. Because I am older than you.

I wear my old-osity like a badge of honor. But that's neither here nor there to my request. If I like something, I like it.

Apparently, you people listen to music that sucks Smiley: laugh

Edit: Directed to the nay-sayers with nothing to recommend

The Bees: I love you. Awesome retro sounding song, tinged with 60s catchy hooks .

Darondo: Didn't I. Cut a great album 25 years ago and then just disappeared, recently this song resurfaced and so it can be considered new, in a sense. The shIt sounds like Al Green, that is if you like that kind of sound.

Jack Johnson: Upside Down. Really good singer/songwriter, and as an added bonus his music was used in the "Curious George" soundtrack/movie so your shorties will like it too.

This is the main reason I don't listen to the radio, because it's full of garbage.

Oh and whoever suggested Cake... Cake sucks ***.

http://videos.napalmrecords.at/videos/huntingsong.wmv (not sure why, but the link only works if you cut and paste it - otherwise you have to find the link on the page this re-directs you to.)

The band is Korpiklaani the song is called Hunting Song...

It's got everything a crackah like you could want - guitars, drums, fiddles, accordians, Finnish folks beats and an angry white guy edge.

Enjoy!

Your recollection and mine differ. I have a sister who is into all sorts of music, and for the most part, I am usually aware of a certain few new artists in certain genres way before she is. Since moving to IL, though, I've lapsed, due in no small part that 80% of radio here is either Top 40 or some kind of oldies station. I miss my old alternative stations, and songs with a beat. Joph is not one for dancing, so most of his songs run towards bluesy-femmes-with-a-guitar type music. I don't want to be one of those people that is old before their time, whining about how everything out there sucks. Joph responded by saying that everything out there does indeed suck and it's not his fault if it does. This is where we parted ways. I'm one of those "Young at Heart" types, while my beloved has been telling bratty kids to get off his lawn since he was old enough to dandle on a porch rocker. It's one of the many reasons I love him, but sometimes, a girl just wants to be pleasantly surprised.

Inserting a Chuck Berry lyric into the thread for new music? AF has a lot of work to do yet!

I am familiar with Cake from the 1990's but I'd have to see if they released anything in the recent past. As an aside, Mlle Flea doesn't like Cake. Her loss, says I.

I saw them open for Tom Petty a month ago and they sounded pretty good. But at the time I was more interested in seeing Mr. Petty. I'll give them a download.

I also recommend the Mighty, Mighty Bosstones. Sort of a Big Band/Punk Rock/Jazz Hybrid.

Weakerthans, Winnipeg band that formed from some of the members of Propaghandi.

No space on the name. For some reason I can see Joph liking them.

Beck's new album is really good, and it comes with stickers!

You know, I am not even sure what the album is called. It just says "Beck" on the front and is otherwise white so that you can decorate with the stickers if you want.

Jack Johnsons Upsidedown is currently the song I have playing on my myspace page. It's easy listening enough that even you would like it Joph Smiley: grin

Ive been lax in keeping up to date with most of the newer stuff out on the radio since I rarely get to control my stereo in the car. When I do I tend to listen to talk radio or listen to one of my cds. One of the newer songs Ive been really enjoying is Evanescence "Call me when you're Sober"

I understand it is pop music and therefore attacking it for being insipid is rather idiotic. However that song is just ***.

You know, it's funny you should bring that up. When I called Joph's music taste "emo", he denied it vehemently, saying that if he were emo, he would like "that Amy Lee chick". I'm pretty sure there was a curse word or two in there, but yeah-Joph's no Evanescence fan.

Well I figured Joph would enjoy it a hell of a lot more than my current enjoyments of Finn Troll and Corpis Klani Smiley: lol

I like Evanescence. The vocal range on that woman is just amazing

I see Joph listening to Tragically Hip, Blue Rodeo, possibly some more electronic type stuff such as Sneakerpimps, Portishead, Massive Attack, Mogwai. Neil Youngs new CD, the new NIN disc is probably their best effort since downward spiral. He'd probably dig Matthew Good. Arcade of Fire etc.

Couldn't say too much, never talked to the guy in real life but it seems like he likes 'not quite emo' music.
