My wife picked up a platter of "2-bite pumpkin tarts" from Kroger.
Is that a brand or a store? I need those.
Kroger is the supermarket. I believe 'Homestyle' is the brand but I'm not sure. I found this pic of them in google cache from some supermarket.

One is better than none. We ended up deciding on the shopping mall since the kids are still too young to have enough steam to walk a neighborhood. The mall loot is nothing impressive.

I am such a horrible mommy. I confiscated all my kids' Smarties. Smiley: laugh

I just can't resist though.

We did get a grip of Reese's Peanut Butter Cups so they get those. I bought a bag of those to give out, but my oldest refuses to give them out.

We had such a poor turn out last night. Even giving each kid 2 eyebals and a Reese's PB cup, I have lots of candy left. The eyeballs were a big hit with the kids though. Parents were a bit grossed out when the kids showed them the eyes as they left the porch, but too bad for them.

I have about 30 eyes and 30 fullsize Reeese's left. Trying to get rid of them at work...well the eyes mostly I have stashed some PB cups in my desk.

We had the eyeball candy too and noticed those were a huge hit. They tasted like *** though.

I had door duty and Im going to estimate we had around 250 kids. Barely any candy left, which is how I like it. Its less tempting. Although food shopping the day after with all the candy at 50% off really tested me

Pics!

I carved the pumpkin for Mr. Pikko's work and it won their carving contest. YaY

Although we'd decided on the mall, we got stuck in traffic on the way home. We picked up dinner, went to the house, ate, then decided we were too lazy to go. So we decided to just go up my MIL's street instead, then go home. It was pretty funny.

The first house just had baskets out front with candy and a "Help Yourself" sign, so we skipped them. The next house when the lady saw how young the kids were she put the candy back and said, "I don't have cookies!!" so she scrounged around and finally came back with 50 cents for each kid. We were like, ok.. The next house had three flights of stairs to the front door and no one came out. The next one was self serve and so was the one after that. We were getting pretty exhausted by now because all the houses in that neighborhood have front doors up an assload of stairs. Add in that the street goes uphill and us having to carry one 22 lb kid and a 26 lb toddler and you get two sweaty parents. We finally get to a house that has a screaming bloody murder baby inside and my daughter says trick or treat really nicely and the guy that comes to the door gave us half the candy in his bowl because hardly anyone had come by. (see: stairs & hills explanation above) My daughter was getting really good at shouting a really cute trick or treat, but would freak out anytime someone started approaching the door and insisted on being carried. When they gave her candy instead of thank you she would say, "I'm SCARED of people!"

At the end of the street she was really enjoying it so we tried one more and by the time we got back my face was beet red and my shirt was soaked, but it was still fun and cute. And it paid off. We got a nice stash of Reeses, Twix, Snickers, 1 pack of chocolate covered mac nuts, and other assorted stuff.

Did you all forget Sixlets? There's just something about them that screams "Halloween Joy"!

Is Halloween a goner as a holiday? More of my co-workers took their kids to "the mall" than actual trick-or-treating. I remember Halloween being second in holiday fun only to Christmas. From the day after reports I heard, many of the kids didn't even bother with costumes. Yes, I place the blame squarely on the parents.

Kids are being robbed I tells ya. Robbed!

We were still going strong here. In the hour I was home before taking my own urchin out on the streets, I had about five or six rings of the doorbell but three to six kids in each group. Given how crowded the street was getting home, I'm sure I missed a bunch of tykes as well before I got home.

I live in an established working-middle class neighborhood though. Lots of families with a pretty traditional mindset who'd pick trick or treating "like they used to do" over options like going to the mall.

Before I moved in VA, there seemed to be a real (read:overblown) safety concern on the parents' part about sending kids around to strangers' homes and the perception that lit, crowded areas like malls were safer. I didn't get almost any trick-or-treaters last year. This year I was trying to remember to check out the sex offender registry but I forgot. Thank goodness Joph had already taken a gander and not seen anyone in our 'hood.

trick or treating house to house is still very strong here. But there are other options that the towns do nowadays, where you can take your kids to the center of town and trick or treat there. We never had that when I was growing up, but I can see it being better than trick or treating in your neighborhood if your neighborhood consists of houses 1/2 mile apart and in wooded areas, which is predominantly what most areas look like where I live.
Or you can do what the rest of the town does and find that one really safe neighborhood with street lights and cul de sacs and take them there. You know, like my neighborhood. Hence the 250 kids we had at our house

We didn't get any kids, but we were out with Mia until 8 and I'm not sure how many kids come around after that.

More candy for me!
