Well Im finally back in good old freezing Mass, after 3.5 days in FL. The Gods of humor decided to amuse themselves while we were down there. We only had one day that hit 91. The day we left, Orlando had a record low of a high of 55. If any of you heard echoing obscenities up and down the east coast yesterday I apologize. That was probably me.

While I would not recomend this place for peopls sans kids, if you have small ones, and you're ever looking to stay in the area, check out the Nickelodean Hotel, which is literally 2 minutes away from Disney. We stayed in a suite with kitchen, bedroom, decent sized living room and large bathroom for $150. The courtyard to our building housed the coolest waterslide
and poolwhich we got to check out one night. Husband had never been on a waterslide before, and would have declined if I were able to go on. Since I wasn't though, I happily sent him off to his doom with our son and laughed my *** off. If you notice the giant prange bucket on the top of the slide, it fills up with 400 lbs of water and then dumps it on unsuspecting people. Yeah, my family got hit with it Smiley: lol

We did the Sea World and Magic Kingdom thing. I was happy to see that except for the roller coasters, I was able to do every other ride, so I wasnt left sitting under a tree for the 10 hours we were there. The lines were short at both places, and we have redoubled our thoughts to never ever go to Disney during a school vacation. Just looking at the areas where the lines *can* get to made us shudder. Worst line was 30 minutes for Thunder Mountain. We were able to hit every single ride we wanted to do and then do a couple of our favorites twice in one day.

A couple things I never get over is the wildlife there. Even in the heart of the cities, FL has some really cool wildlife hanging about. My son and I tried to catch the geckos while we were playing mini golf. We saw a few giant black birds that made us all go "whoa" and I looked them up this morning to find out they were vultures. And I had a giant grin on my face coming home after seeing my very first alligator in the wild, sunning itself on the banks of a swamp.

All in all, despite the freezing weather yesterday there, and being very sore from all the walking we did, we had a pretty good time.

what kind of pics are you looking for? I have some of my son making goofy faces, pics of some animals from Sea World, and pics of some of the rides at Disney. All standard vacation pics. And no, not one has me in it. I was the photo taker Smiley: tongue

That sounds like so much fun! Even if it wasn't toasty warm, at least you got some good family time in. I don't get on MySpace anymore (banned from my list of allowable work sites), so you may have to link pics here.

I remember being at Kennedy space centre as a kid and they had fans going to cool people down while they were waiting in line for some game/exhibit. Some sort of reptile was crawling by the fan and its tail got stuck in it and cut off and it landed down a old ladies shirt.

She just about sh'it herself.

Probably the best part of the trip.

Here's a couple pics from our room.

living room area standing in the kitchen

flatscreen tv in LR.. also one was in the bedroom too

the kitchen

bedroom

Also, one of the animals I saw at Sea World, which was not an attraction but one of their fish living in the lagoon was this massive fish. I dont know what it is but I was fascinated by it. The thing looks like a blue goldfish, but it was about as big as my hand to my elbow. I couldnt help but chuckle thinking of it on a platter, served in one of their fine restraunts. Im still trying to look it up. If anyone knows I would love to find out what the heck it was.

Also, this was the vulture
we saw a few times. The first time I saw it was yesterday morning while we were sitting down to eat at a character breakfast. It was sitting on a lamp post across the lagoon, just staring. It was just huge!

I've only stayed at the cheap hotels in DW. Then I just take the free shuttle to the expensive hotels and swim in their superior pools.

The hotel we stayed at wasn't actually a part of Disney. But it was literally two minutes away. They had free shuttles to Universal and Disney, but we rented a car for $26. Everything but the tickets we got supercheap online. The only reason we went is because the hotel was having a sale on their suites and we were able to get airfare for $69 a person one way. By the way, Jet Blue is the way to go. No delays, always on time, big comfy leather seats with individual tvs in the back. I heart Jet Blue

I always pull my kids out of school for our Disney trips. Its usually a group of us, so we stay away from the hotels. Last trip was my parents, the four in my family, my sister and her loser boyfriend and my aunt and cousin. I also had a friend fly in from NJ. Its not cost effective with a group, but the Nick Hotel looks awesome.

I usually get a call from my mom several months in advance. "We need you to do that thing where you go online and get us a really good deal in FL for a bazillion of us to stay in the same place. This time, I outdid myself with a 5 bedroom home, 4 full bathrooms, full kitchen, den, livingroom and screened "Florida Room" with our own pool. $119 a night, minus 10% for military, aarp, or AAA (essentially gave us one night free). We had all three, so they just had to pick one. I DID pay extra for my dog, but that was my own extra expense. We were 20 minutes from Disney, but it was all highway, instead of 20 minutes on Irlow Bronson, stopped in traffic, but only 4 miles from disney.

It was gorgeous and I have pics, if anyone is interested. DSD did you do any of the Halloween nights at either Disney, or Universal? My dad showed my kids how if you waited long enough, you could get back into the line for candy 5, or 6 times. I don't know how they could miss a fat, old guy with a handlebar moustache, but meh.

Katie, was it something like Dixie Landings on a water front? Very pretty. Have you looked into the military rooms/housing, they (not disney) offer? They fill up fast, but my uncle and aunt enjoyed them. Greensleeves, or something.

I always pull my kids from school for it (summer is insane). Time spent with family is priceless and I never got to experience going places with my grandparents. I envy my kids and its an experience that they can never trade in for 2 weeks of math homework. Character developement is so important, yet lacking in many schools and I am not about to ever deny my kids the chance to spend time with family. School will be there when we get back from having a blast, as a family!^^

Sea World had a halloween thing going on while we were there that was free. You walked up and down the walkways and there were candy booths set up alongside.Kids were given a candy bag and they would go trick or treat at the booths. My son brought home a huge bag filled with sweets that he's only 1/3 through.

Disney had the Not So Scary Halloween thing that we almost did, but it was an extra $40 per person, and it just allowed you to ride the rides from 7pm-12am. Since we had been at the park since 10:30 and had done all we wanted to do we opted out. We were exhausted by 7.

Hubby and I did the Halloween thing at Universal 6 yrs ago on our honeymoon and we had a ball! But we decided sadly it was a little too scary for a 4 yr old. Great for bigger kids and adults, however. Both times we've been to the resort area has been October and we've decided thats the best time to go. So next time we go we hope our kids will be old enough to enjoy it and go there.

I too, think that time spent with the family is much more important than missing a bit of school. I have no qualms in taking our kids out next time and bringing their schoolwork with them if needed. The memories you make as a family I find are more important. Waiting in line for 2+ hours for a 30 second ride in 100+ heat during the summer is just not worth spending all that cash. If you're going to do it, do it right and really enjoy the time with your family. Both times Ive gone in October the waits at any theme park are no longer than ten minutes, except for Thunder Mountain. Even then, a 30 minute wait isnt too bad. As a child I never had any vacations like this and already my son is dying to go back. Only ride he couldnt go on was Space Mountain. If only he had been 2 inches taller Smiley: laugh Hes a rollercoaster nut, just like his parents

I'd like to go to Universal Studios more than Disney, I think, although I've never been to either. I don't like rollercoasters, or anything like that.

when it comes to theme parks, for kids, Id suggest Disney unless they are 48inches or higher. As an adult, I found Disney to be on the lamer side. I like fast rides. Give me thrills, give me loops, give me rides that will make me scream. If you're going as an adult who likes thrills, might I suggest Universals Island of Adventures? We didnt make it there this time around, but 6 years ago we hit almost every park in Fl, and that was by far, my favorite. Best rollercoasters ever (Hulk and Dueling Dragons) best 3d ride (Spiderman) and when it comes to actual themes, they had it down pat. Marvel City, Toon Land, Seuss Land (for the kiddies), Jurassic Park, Land of the Lost, etc. Each themed area was like stepping into a new world. And the rides there were brand new and up to date on technology.

We laughed when we went through thr Pirates of the Caribean in Magic Kingdom. They added robotic Jack Sparrow to the ride, a perfect imitation of Johnny Depp. But you could tell how old all the other priates were when compared to him. he looked much more realistic even despite the plasticy look and moved more normally than the older robots. I think if Disney took the time to revamp a bit of their older stuff they could really do well.

Oh yeah and every other ride was stopped halfway through for some "technical difficulty". I am SOOOO glad we opted out of Its a Small World ride because if we had stopped in there I would have come out insane. As it was I blamed my son for breaking the rides. He took it in stride and told me we just got more time on the rides than we would have Smiley: laugh

Pirates was closed when we went this year. My Dad was bummed. Its his favorite. Two years ago, we did the "Not-So-Scary" party, for my son's birthday. It makes for a long day, but now that we have done it once, we can avoid it.

Having to use a wheelchair, at times, gave me insight that often when they stop a ride, even if they call it technical difficulties, its to transfer people into the ride from their chair. I love getting stuck in Buzz Lightyear, even though we don't need to stop in one place for me to skunk my family.^^

We are skipping FL on our next vacation. My kids want to do haunted tours and mining adventures. It sounds fun, so we are going to give it a go.

It's been getting rather nippy here in Texas, at least in the Dallas region.

I wonder if the Cowboys will win a Super Bowl againwe'll freeze over again.

Seriously, the last 3 times that the Comboys were at the Super Bowl, Dallas froze over and we won. Coincidence?.... prolly.
