MIAMI, Florida (Reuters) -- A leaping stingray stabbed an 81-year-old Florida boater in the chest, authorities said Wednesday, leaving its poisonous stinger lodged close to his heart in an incident recalling the one that killed Australian TV naturalist Steve Irwin last month.

Fire Department officials in Lighthouse Point, about 30 miles north of Miami, said James Bertakis was in a small recreational boat with two grandchildren Tuesday when the spotted eagle ray leaped aboard and struck him.

"It's just a real freak thing," Lt. Mike Sullivan told Reuters, saying the incident occurred on Florida's Intracoastal Waterway, where stingrays are rarely seen leaping in the air.

"For an 81-year-old man he's in really good shape," Sullivan added, saying Bertakis was expected to make a full recovery after surgery at a local hospital to have the stinger removed from his chest.

"Crocodile Hunter" Irwin, 44, died when a stingray's stinger punctured his heart off Australia's north coast last month. It was one of only a handful of stingray fatalities on record.

So some 81 year old man can get stung in the chest and live but 44 year old Stevie Irwin dies? It's a conspiracy!! Irwin must actually still be alive. I think he's in the witness protection program or maybe he's leading a team of crack commandos deep into the heart of the South American jungle in search of the predator.

its nature getting even. leave it to the biased media to leave out the thousands of innocent fish that 81 year old man butchered. and no mention of how he was training those children to become killers too.

long live the fish king.

Spotted eagle rays are gorgeous. I hope some yahoo doesn't decide to take "revenge".

Things always happen in three's. I wonder who the third person attacked by a stingray is going to be.

Also, I think they should make a movie about this attack. I'd call it "Stingrays. On a Boat!!"

i saw a video a while back of a father and son marlin fishing. it was a home made film.

they hooked into a 2 to 300 lb marlin and fought it for a while. after a time, it swam streight for the boat and lept over it, impaleing the son in the chest, and going overboard with him.

the son said it started swimming streight down with him. he managed to push himself off the fish and swim the 30 to 40 feet back to the surface. teh video only shows the fish comming over the side, then the splash on the other side and some screaming about the son going with it. the son was late teens early 20ish.

that poor fish. first getting your jaw jacked by a steel barb, then dragged around and tortured with your life flashing before your eyes while some mamel gets his jolly,s, then, just when you think your at the end, you lash out and spear the silly mamel to teach him a lesson all to have to spend the next few agonizing weeks of your life with a steel barb in your mouth rusting and creating an infection that will eventually kill you in the end.

no justice for the fishies.
