The AP wrote:
NEW YORK -- Air America Radio, the liberal talk and news radio network that features the comedian Al Franken, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, a network official told The Associated Press.

The network had denied rumors just a month ago that it would file for bankruptcy protection. On Friday, Air America spokeswoman Jaime Horn told the AP that the filing became necessary only recently after negotiations with a creditor from the privately held company's early days broke down.

Horn declined to name the creditor with which talks had reached a logjam. The company will operate in the interim with funding from its current investor group, Horn said.

Air America has struggled financially since its inception. Documents filed with the bankruptcy court show that the company lost $9.1 million in 2004, $19.6 million in 2005 and $13.1 million so far in 2006.
Poor Gbaji. If this keeps up, he'll have to start getting his liberal talking point cites from some other source. Of course, the fact that he's the only one on the forums who can cite what they're saying on that station may well explain why they're hemmoraging money.

I used to listen to it from time to time during its first Chicago incarnation before their host station locked the doors on them due to unpaid rent. They sucked then and I'm assuming that they still suck now. Why they can't find some talent with charisma who someone would want to listen to is beyond me.

According to their site, they're back in the Windy City broadcasting on WCPT - 850 AM.

They must be broadcasting from someone's basement using a RadioShack crystal radio transmitter kit because I'll be damned if I've stumbled across them in the past couple of years.

I learned about it last week when the comic strip Prickly City ran a few days worth material about it on October 3, 4, 5 and 6. I got a good chuckle.

I can't believe they're still trying to continue. They honestly think it's just a matter of fixing a problem with a creditor.

Huh. I first thought this was a thread where you found out some secret super-secret black flight ops had been uncovered which stemmed back to the Vietnam days and was being deactivated due to lack of funding.

Never mind. Carry on about Al Frankin, one of the most irrelevant talk show hosts since that liberal acting chick who thought she had something worth listening to also. It makes me think that public debate must be in the genes of conservatives and somehow mutant DNA kills it off in libs.

I would assume that most of the Liberal commentators will continue on with other networks. They just wont have a single corporate entity underwhich to run all their different shows. It's not like Franken wasn't on the air *before* Air America showed up. And Alan Colmes has had a radio show for quite some time (of course, he's on Fox News, but his views don't stray that far from Someone like Shultz, or Lionel).

The problem wasn't the format, or the creditors (although they did typically go spend crazy when they got their first funding sources, and then when the bills came in nearly went bankrupt), the problem is that the people they actually put on the show are almost all nutjobs. There are a handful of "reasonable" commentators. They're still kinda fringey, and sometimes you're still going to have a jaw-drop-to-the-floor moment when listening to them talk, but at least they're "talking" about the issues. A large percentage of their commentators essentially did nothing but make jokes and slams about everything Republican or Conservative.

That's not talk radio. That's just someone sitting there in front of a microphone venting about how much they hate Republicans for 3 hours at a time. You're not going to keep listeners for long unless you can actually speack intelligently about current events, and very very few of them can.

Talk about a limp leftist revolution. You have the right to listen or a cultural re-education program will be provided for you if you can't afford this week's short bus special interest rate. But then again there always was a long line Honesty shortage from said socialists. Domage.
