What's different about Russia is that there is no declaration of war in Russia itself, it is nominally at peace, and yet we've documented these 13 contract-style killings since Vladimir Putin took office. Some of the journalists on the CPJ list of contract-killing victims were, like Politkovskaya, critical of government policy -- whether at a national or local level. Many others were covering corruption at the time of their deaths. And the further you get from the federal center, Wright notes, the more brazen the attacks on journalists become.

"It can be harder to hold people accountable in the provinces of many countries around the world, including Russia. My understanding of these cases in Tolyatti is that they have become almost emblematic of the climate of lawlessness and impunity that you find in Russia today," Wright said. "Investigations were not taken seriously, people were arrested and acquitted."

These guys are too typical.

Basically if a journalist speaks out against Putin, or the government, or human rights, or anything they get killed. I'd imagine that goes for more than just journalists. They even killed an American one too a few years ago.

along those lines, I heard that they are having an increasing ammount of bombings from various different groups which are always covered up.

Imagine all the other news we don't hear from this rather large, Teutonic, nuclear power.

I know a professor who grew up under Russian control in - I think Latvia. Anyway, she hates them. Privately she blames the Mongol influence on Russians. For a long time the Mongols controlled/dominated them. Dunno if she's right, but I find it interesting that she would conclude that this is their major problem, that centuries ago they adopted a lot of Mongol societal traits.

The Mongols? What's next, blaming Al Queda on the Persians?

The Mongols?

I was watching a movie a while back that took place in Russia and one of the people in it looked totally Asian. It was a WW2 movie; so you have blonde/blue eyed people fighting alongside Asian looking people... and all speaking the same languange.... then I thought about those stereo-typical Mongol fur hats... and the stereo typical Russian fur hats and it all came together... That here is a culture that is a unique mix of European and Asian culture. Very interesting. then if you think about the similarities of Vikings and Mongols and it seems that it's a match made in heaven.
