Well, that's kind of the point of them. Exceptional silliness. It helps to appreciate/have an affinity for British humour. I've always had both. As in any series, some are hit and miss...I'm glad to say I've enjoyed most of them. Even the ones that weren't as great were still far better than some of the awful fantasy novels that I couldn't even bear to even finish.

The first couple of novels are ok, but since Pratchett has several "main" characters and storylines, it's not difficult to find and enjoy one or more to suit you.

I recommend any of the novels involving the Night Watch (Commander Vimes, Vetinari the Patrician, Capt. Carrot, Angua, Nobby, etc.), the three witches (Granny Weatherwax, Nanny Ogg, Magrat Garlick), or Death and his grandaughter, Susan. I also like Rincewind, his first character, a cowardly wizard, and his fellow wizards at Unseen University and one of the most popular characters, the Librarian (who got turned into an orangutan is the happier for it).

One of my new favorite "main characters" is Lu Tze, one of the Monks of History. Here's a little blurb on the Thief of Time novel in which Lu Tze is featured:

Quote:
Time is a resource. Everyone knows it has to be managed.

And on Discworld that is the job of the Monks of History, who store it and pump it from the places where it's wasted (like underwater -- how much time does a codfish need?) to places like cities, where there's never enough time.

But the construction of the world's first truly accurate clock starts a race against, well, time for Lu Tze and his apprentice Lobsang Ludd. Because it will stop time. And that will only be the start of everyone's problems.

Thief of Time comes complete with a full supporting cast of heroes and villains, yetis, martial artists and Ronnie, the fifth Horseman of the Apocalypse (who left before they became famous).

There are also a ton of bit players that pop up in almost all of the novels, such as Gaspode, the talking wonder dog, and Cut-Me-Own-Throat Dibbler, a street vendor who sells godawful sausages.
