I'm actually an ISSA certified personal trainer. Specializing in freaky exercises of course.

Keep them from swelling?? That's the best part! Nothing like walking out of the gym your first day back after a long hiatus with swollen, bulging muscles.

Good luck Joph, I'm in the same boat, but have been regularly excercising since we moved back to California (about a month now). The initial pain/torture/soreness has pretty much worn off now.

I am fortunate to have a park across the street from us with an indoor pool. I go every other night for an hour and swim on average about 40 laps. It's great exercise with no impact and all my muscles are getting a work out. I tried going every night, but my muscles weren't having it. Apparently, my muscles decided I have to have a day off in-between swim workouts (I use to work out with weights so I'm just applying the same principal) and that way I'm not overdoing it (as I usually do with running, weight training, etc.).

Anyhoo, a month later, I'm losing weight, toning up, swimming faster, have better stamina and feel overall a hell of a lot better. I also understand I have a long way to reach my ideal weight, but I'm still plugging away at it. I have my days when exercise is the last thing I want to do, but then I just look in the mirror and I find that motivation to get me going.

I've never been a smoker and this may not be the best comparison, but I liken exercise to quitting smoking. It's pure torture when you first start it, but it does get better.

Oh and Advil ftw! Seriously.

Is there any truth to the popular (in my neck of the woods) myth that taking an aspirin after working out reduces the severity of sore muscles?

Apparently since it facilitates blood flow, it's supposed to evacuate the toxins that settle in the muscle tissue faster.

Aspirin thins the blood, but otherwise does nothing beyond allieviating muscle soreness. It does not remove lactic acid any faster than a body without aspirin.

Aspirin is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, though; so just like ibuprofen, it will help prevent swelling and inflammation.

The trick to all NSAIDs is to take enough to help without taking too much. Ibuprofen has a wider dosage range that you can take before your ears start ringing and your stomach gets upset.
