Last week, Flea and I joined some gym because apparently she has this crazy notion that typing and drinking diet sodas doesn't burn enough calories. Two nights ago, we made our first trip and I spent about a half hour on some inclined treadmill thingie and then played with some weight machines and whatnot. I even walked a few laps to try to cool down.

Yesterday, good as gold. Right as rain. Fit as a fiddle. So on and so forth.

This morning, holy Mother of Sacred Saints, I think that leprechauns came into my room last night and beat the fuck out of me with their little oaken shillelaghs while I was sleeping. Either that or I need to stop working out and Flea wouldn't be having any of that so I'm sticking with my leprechaun story.

hehe, its funny how you feel everything the day after a good workout. Chin up. It only lasts a couple of weeks if you continue. Then your body gets used to physical activity and you're golden.
I just got back from swimming for the first time in a couple months and I can already feel the muscles groaning.

Also a hot shower and stretching before bed does wonders

Ibuprofen.

Eat a banana before you leave the house on the way to the gym and take 250mg of Motrin or some other ibuprofen. Work out, then take 500mg of Motrin. Then take another 250mg the next morning. Keep this up until you have built up a base of muscle tone. Make sure you eat something or else the pills will give you an upset stomach. It has an added benefit of keeping tendons and ligaments from swelling as well-- something that is common for people who are weight lifting for the first time in a while (or ever, for that matter).

The actual day after, I felt fine.

It's the day after the day after that's kicking my ***.

I'm Motrin-less at the office (and Totem's suggestions were for working out) but his post reminds me that I have a bottle of Tylenol squirreled away in my desk. Huzzah!

Once upon a time, not too long ago, this would have been nothing. I used to work for years in a retail garden center work and spent my days hefting around bags of soil, sand, mulch, etc as well as moving five gallon pots of soil around, helping load 15' tall trees and that sort of thing. Then I got a desk job and never bothered to try to keep up on what used to be a regular part of my day. Weight-wise, I'm not upset with myself but muscle-wise, I got a lot softer than I had thought. Ouch!

Yeah it always feels the worst either the second or third day. It is up to you to decide wether it is a good pain meaning you got a good workout, or if it is so bad that lets you know you over did it and should take it a little slower at first.

I have always had strong calves and I use to do 350 lb calf raises for my sets. I had not worked out for a couple years and went back to the gym. My calves were still very strong and I found out I could still do my sets with 350 lbs. Two days later walking was almost impossible. I am very good at handling pain, but I overworked my claves so badly it was no longer a choice of bearing the pain, but more of I was physically unable to walk.

Moral of the story is, being a ***** when you start working out is a good practice.

Every Thanksgiving me and my friends go out and play tackle football first thing in the morning. This up coming year will be the 11th straight year of this ritual and now we have about 50 people coming out each year. We organize it down to like 6 teams and beat the hell out of each other.

The next day I can't move. I mean, last year it was so bad I could not drive because my leg was too sore to depress the clutch.

Tylenol did not work...hell I doubt morphine would have done the trick.

Everytime I go back to the gym after any lay off of any sort, even if its only 2 weeks off from the gym, I usually go back into a light routine for the first week or two (longer if you haven't worked out in over 2 months). Try doing 3-4 sets with reps of 12 on a weight that just barely starts to burn by the 11-12th rep. This allows the muscles to gradually get back into things and you won't hurt nearly as much. Of course, Totem's recipe works too, but I tend to only use pain killers when nothing else will work for me.

As well, even though you hurt immensely right now, best thing you can do is go back in today, do a very light workout and get the blood pumping through the muscles and stretch them out. I'd suggest doing some cardio for 20-30 minutes before you hit any weights to get the blood into the muscles first.

Actually, you should avoid Tylenol and acetaminophen products, FleaJo2. The two types of pain relievers work on seperate kinds of aches and pains. Katie could tell you more about this than I can, but ibuprofen, as I understand it, does not block pain receptors like Tylenol does, but rather reduces inflamation and speeds muscle recovery. In other words, the results feel the same, but the methodology of the chemicals is more beneficial in the ibuprofen line for exercise.

Not if I don't leave marks.

Tylenol is better than aspirin, since anything with ibuprofen isn't good for stomach issues.

My knees hurt a bit yesterday, but my thighs really hurt today-in a good kind of way. We have free sessions with a personal trainer included, so I think we should schedule those ASAP to make sure we're doing the right thing.

Just make sure you eat before you take ibuprofen to prevent stomach problems.

Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness and lactic acid build-up. Some inflammation from the stress damage on muscle fibers. Your body will learn to reduce the amount of acid buildup and heavy stress will cause less inflamation after a couple of weeks.
Best thing you can do is to do a 5 minute warm up (or until you begin to sweat), followed by 2 lights sets for each muscle. At the end of the workout, stretch again.
Take Alleve or another anti-inflammatory and enjoy the fruits of your labor.

I'd pm you a picture of me for something to aspire too while working out, however we wouldn't want to tempt your weaker half (and by weaker I mean the more physically fit peruvian half) since that would be counter productive to your actual goal.

Good luck Poppin Fresh, perhaps you will be able to beat Neph in a wrasslin' contest come Alla~fest 2007 in Chicago.

I've always found the best way to help relax those aching muscles is to soak in a nice hot bath and have a bottle..er..glass of wine.

Ball up Nancy boy. After you have gone to the gym on a regular basis the Leprachans will be to scared to beat your *** for protection money.

After taking up the bachelor's life of wine, women and song I realized I was going to get a beer belly before long. The gym hurt like hell for the first month or so but the results are reward enough.

I'm sure I will feel the same Monday as I will be running a 5 Mile "Hash" through the woods. I have not ran in years and smoke a wee bit much.

I've been debating on getting a gym membership again. I had one but the gym sucked, it was slammed all the time and I kept thinking I was in a popular nightclub trying to force my way to the bar for a beer every time I tried to get on a machine to work out. I fooled myself into thinking I'd just do the home workout thing, but it hasn't really worked out. There's a gym about 3 blocks from my new place, I'll probably go check it out this weekend.

Good luck and stick with it.
