Sept. 21, 2006 — Studies of resumes have found that people with black-sounding names are less likely to get callbacks.

"20/20" put 22 pairs of names to the test, posting identical resumes except for the names at the top.

The resumes with the white-sounding names were actually downloaded 17 percent more often by job recruiters than the resumes with black-sounding names.

What are some of those names? Here's a list from the book "Freakonomics," by Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner, showing the top 20 whitest- and blackest-sounding girl and boy names.

Nah. I know a TON more hispanics named Jasmin than black chicks. JazmÃn was even a novela when I was growing up, and that was the title character's name.

We have a Jasmine (Jasmin? Jhazmynn?) working here from Hawaii.

My friend's daughter is named Jasmin and they're white as the driven snow. Of course, he also named his son Xavian so he may have just been drawing Scrabble tiles out of a hat.

Jasmin search

Isn't Jasmine a white flower too? I'd think that calling a darky a white flower would be an insult to the color white.

I think it might have something to do with being able to say the person's name as well. When I was in college I was on an alumni board and had to call them to update their information (address, tel #, etc...). I always dreaded calling people with foreign names for fear of pronouncing it wrong.

Shariqua Alarcquizarie is harder to pronounce than Holly Smith.

Also I would venture a guess that most of the people doing the highering at a lot of big businesses are either white or socialized white. Subconsciously a person is more likely to choose a candidate that is more like themselves.

75% of those "black" names don't sound black to me at all. Hell, none of them do.

Now if they started signing resumes with nicknames, that'd be a dead giveaway. Actually, that's not an ethnic thing. They'd all sound like rappers then. I'm an equal opportunity hater. Black. White. Knock dead gorgeous female of any human ethnic background... I'll hate you the same.

The c is silent in rap.

Enough different spellings of Katelyn in that list? Sheesh.

You guys should read Freakonomics, really. It explains how rich parents often choose foreign or "rare" names for their kids. When these kids become sucessful and the names famous, it becomes common amongst poorer people, and rich people stop naming their kids like that. So the most popular names amongst rich parents become the most popular names amongst porrer parents after 20 years or so. The correlation is quite striking. So, in 20 years time, "Maddison" will be extremely popular as a name for kids of "poor" families.

The phenomenon is somewhat similar for "white" names and "black" names.

Anyway, read this book if you've got nothing better to do, and judging by your post count...
