Death, the final frontier...Follow

Once, when I was 6 or 7 years old, I stayed the night at my Uncle Jerry's house when he still had an apartment in Davenport. Just across the street from the Village Inn on Harrison. He lived in a 2 bedroom, above a really old guy that smelt like sweet corn and mustache wax. Jerry always had alot of weird things in his apartment. He was kind of a quirky guy. He collected lighters. Ya know, the ones that you get at gas stations for 4 or 5 bucks? They light up and make funny (yet annoying) noises, have weird shapes and stop working after a month. He gave me my first computer, my first couch for my first apartment. Gave me some of my very first comic books. He was always recording something on TV and had a billion video tapes.

One of these tapes had Star Trek. Now my Mother always watched Sci-Fi with me as a child but it was Jerry who gave the spark. That man is responsible for turning me into a huge geek. Who knew, when I was 6 or 7, that it would be the bane of my teenage years. Do you realize how much *** I missed out on, Jerry, from your damnable Star Trek? Thanks Unc'

Jerry, you left too soon. You, with your stubbornness, never showing up for family functions unless you felt like it, never gave anyone a proper chance to tell you that we will all miss you. What the hell is this family going to do without you to ***** about Smiley: lol I guess they will just have to bitch about me not showing up. Smiley: grin

Sometime this morning, around 4:30 AM, my Uncle passed away from a heart attack. First born to my Grandparents on my Fathers side, Oldest Brother to 6 siblings, Husband and Sci-Fi fan.

Rest in peace,

Your Nephew.

Wonderful memorial. Sounds like a great guy. Unfortunantly I had to become the geek I am today all by myself. I'm so jealous, I never had a relationship with a family member or friend that sounds anything like what you had.

Sorry for your loss.

Your remembrances totally remind me of my grandmother's funeral about 9 years ago. After the casket was finally closed and they were about to wheel the casket out the church amidst the sobbing, crying and wailing of my family (Filipinos can be very vocal about their emotions), my father, the jokester in the family, goes up to the podium. Everyone quiets down and looks at him and he gazes up and then says into the microphone "Okay, beam her up God." Smiley: oyvey

Very cool memorial, Kaelesh. I'm sorry for your loss. I recently lost one of my uncles earlier this year and it's not only sad to lose the uncle, but sad to see the pain and realization of their mortality in my other uncles and father's eyes. Losing a sibling has got to be a tough wake up call (at any age, of course) as they are all in their retirment years.

For what it's worth, I get comfort (based entirely upon faith and not fact, obviously) in that I just "feel" that those who have passed on are together and are watching over those of us they left behind. While I will be sad at leaving my family when I die (you know, if I actually have time to dwell on it during the process and not, like, screaming in intense pain or anything), I somehow just know I'll be seeing my lost loved ones again. Hopefully, in a place that lacks fire and brimstone and shit like that.

Grandma? Dat you?

I get my pot from my uncle, so if he were to die, well, I don't know how I'd cope.

Well, duh, smoke more dope! It cures what ails ya...Smiley: drunk

I have full confidence in your resourcefulness to acquire more herb.

If that fails, you can't go wrong with drinking heavily. Smiley: chug

I spoke with my father this morning (who is now the oldest of the siblings) and he is having a mini-meltdown. Being only 2 years younger then my uncle has got him a bit freaked out about his mortality.

On the plus side (is there one?) my family is coming in from all over the country to be here for the services, it's just a damn shame that it took this of all things to get everyone together.

Oh and BT? I get mine from my youngest Uncle...so I think I'm good for a few years Smiley: grin Well, I hope anyway.

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone for the words. Rateupsallaround.

It is too bad that it often takes a death in the family to get everyone together.

Condolences, and Shit.

Sadly, with everyone caught up in their own worlds, this is the way for my family as well.
