During an election debate at the weekend in the outskirts of Chicago, Peter Roskam, the Republican candidate for Illinois's sixth district, trotted out the familiar line that his Democratic opponent wanted America to "cut and run" from Iraq.

His opponent, Tammy Duckworth, a former National Guard pilot who lost both her legs in Iraq last year when her helicopter was shot down by a rocket-propelled grenade, was visibly angry at the exchange. "I just could not believe he would say that to me," said Ms Duckworth, who now walks on artificial legs with the help of a cane.

After Henry Hyde announced his retirement after a kajillion years in Illinois's 6th district, it should have been a cakewalk for a Republican to pick up the torch. The 6th district is pretty much Republican to the core and the fact that Duckworth is polling even with Roskam is an embarassment and I'm sure it has the GOP in full tizzy mode.

Roskam is a joke. He railed on about how predatory lawyers were driving doctors out of state and Roskam is -- you guessed it, a personal injury attorney. With a big ole sleazy "No Fee Until You Collect!" phone book ad. In fact, he made over $600,000 last year in fees from personal injury cases. A former DeLay aid, he responded to the DeLay scandal by lying, saying he had no contact with DeLay for 20 years... apparently forgetting the fundraiser DeLay hosted for him in 2005. He's been caught lying about his own fundraising and recordkeeping.

But, it's still a strongly conservative district which includes Wheaton, Illinois; the town with the most churches per capita in the United States. Duckworth has her work cut out for her, especially since the Republicans are pouring it on thick to try to keep the district Republican.

Oh, and just for giggles, I saw this on Roskam's website:
The website wrote:
On March 21, 2006 Peter Roskam received more than 50,000 votes even though he was unopposed in the primary - eclipsing his opponent by more than 35,000 votes.
Erm... there was a gubernatorial primary occuring on that same ballot and three candidates running for the Republican governor's ticket. If people were casting Republican ballots on the governor race (you have to request your party's primary ballot in IL), doesn't it kind of stand to reason that they'd punch the unopposed Roskam ticket when they reach that line on the ballot?
