According to the American Cancer Society, 1 in every 3 women will develop cancer at some point. For guys it's even worse -- 1 in every 2 men will get some kind of cancer at some point in their lives. That's pretty startling I think.

So it's quite likely that you know more than just one or two people who have had cancer. And I'm not talking about Peter Jennings or some other celebrity. I mean close family and friends. Some of my list, for example:

-- Grandfather died of lung cancer (long-term heavey smoker)
-- Uncle died of brain cancer
-- Mother had breast cancer (treated and cured)
-- Uncle currently has mesothelioma (a kind of lung cancer; he'll die within a couple years)
-- Close friend my age was recently diagnosed with lung cancer

So what about you? How many of your friends and family have had cancer? Do you worry about getting it yourself? Do you do anything about it?

::::::::

In case you're morbidly interested, the top 3 risks for men:
1 in 6 will get Prostate cancer
1 in 13 will get Lung cancer
1 in 17 will get Colon/Rectal cancer

For women:
1 in 8 will get Breast cancer
1 in 17 will get Lung cancer
1 in 18 will get Colon/Rectal cancer

Maternal grandfather died of lung cancer
Paternal grandmother died of pancreatic cancer

For myself, I don't worry about cancer as much. My grandfather was a heavy smoker in his day and although he quit many years ago, his actions still caught up with him. The doctors told the family that my grandmother's cancer probably developed because of her advanced age (not sure how much of that is believable).

There are no other incidences of cancer in my family that I know of. My husband doesn't know of anyone in his family that has suffered from cancer (but then again, he doesn't stay in touch with much of them to begin with).

My two boys that I adopted though, I have serious concerns.

Their birth mother died from breast cancer at the age of 27.
Their maternal aunt is suffering from ovarian cancer right now.
A few of other relatives on their birth mother's side of the family have died from cancer.
My youngest son was born with a cancerous mole on his leg and we had to have that removed by the time he was 5.

I can't think of any relatives offhand that may have had cancer, but I'm sure I'm just forgetting. Grandfather died of a heart attack, grandmother had a stroke, uncle had a heart attack, and the others that have died (that I can think of) just died of old age.

I'm worried about lung cancer, so I've quit smoking. Going pretty good so far, but it's not been a week yet.

My aunt died of brain cancer.
Great grandpa had the cancer all over, and it killed him, too.

I find it highly unfair that women have such a low occurence of prostate cancer.

My Grand-aunt? (grandmother's twin sister) had cancer. There were several on her side of the family that had it. No one else in my direct family tree has had it.

I don't know my father's side of the family, so the possibility exists there. Do I stay up nights worrying about it? No. However, you can bet once I hit 40 I'll probably pick up some extra insurance (AFLAC!!!11) to hedge my bets.

Father with lung cancer passed away in the beginning of August. Nobody else in our family that I can recall has ever been diagnosed with it before then.
