Well Israel didn't really accomplish their goal did they? They went into it trying to strongarm Lebanon and Hezbollah into releasing prisoners. They also wanted to bloody Hezbollahs strongholds around the border. They got no prisoners back and did no damage that couldnt be repaired/fixed to stronghold.
All the while they pushed more moderate muslims onto Hezbollahs side, strengthened Hezbollahs position politically in Lebanon, procured aide from the West and shown the Muslim world as a whole that they can stand up to Israeli military force with no significant losses while drastically lessening Israels political clout.
Not a "We pwnxored your army" victory but better than the last time Israel invaded and they had a 10 year occupation where they could effectively do nothing.
Their objective was not to level Lebanon to the ground, because they could have.
They did not drastically lesen their clout....a show of that is the U.N.'s resolution to have Hezbollah completely disarm. No country jumped to the gun like they were waiting to do in the first Gulf War. No one blamed Israel for responding. The aid that Lebanon received was not a show of support for Hezbollah, it was aid directed at those caught in the middle.
They did not stand up to the Israeli army, they hid in civilian areas and launched rockets at towns.
Israel had to respond, and they did so in the most responsible way. It was no victory for either party, but could there have been? No.
