For those that follow the BBC petrol-heads TV show Top Gear, you'll know about my hero Richard "The Hamster" Hammond

Quote:
Top Gear presenter hurt in crash

Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond is in a critical condition in hospital after a crash in a jet-powered car while filming for the programme.

The presenter, 36, was taken by air ambulance to Leeds General Infirmary which has a special neurological unit.

A North Yorkshire Ambulance Service spokesman said he was unconscious when they got to the scene and a hospital spokesman described him as "critical".

The BBC confirmed the presenter had been injured during a Top Gear shoot.

Inspector Mike Thompson, of North Yorkshire Police, said officers were dealing with the incident at Elvington airfield, a former RAF base, in North Yorkshire.

He said: "At 5.45pm this evening we received a report via the fire service of a male person trapped in what was described as an overturned jet car which had been driven on the airfield.

"The male occupant has received serious injuries and has been airlifted to hospital at Leeds"

Apart from being sickeningly cool, he's also an incredibly nice chap. I'm crossing my fingers he'll pull through.

Just spoken to a mate on the production crew.

Apparently the crash was terrible and they thought he was dead.

They freed him and he walked from the wreckage to the air ambulance, but on arrival at LGI he was admitted in a critical condition Smiley: cry

You haven't seen Shrek 2 or just don't remember it?

That song played close to the end of the movie when the giant gingerbread man marched towards the castle. hehe

I am, taking a 5 minute break. They are having me recheck all the EFT transfers from 05. Been at that all day today. Apparently, the ironic thing about working in an accounting facility is knowing that 2005 taxes weren't properly entered. Smiley: oyvey

Richard Hammond is amazing!

Not only is he fantasticly hilarious in Top Gear. He's great in Brainiac too!

Fingers crossed chappy. Although, I'm sure it was a spectacular crash.

Can't stay after work today; have errands. Tomorrow, I'm planning on comming earlier to work and staying late to have a not-so-bleak update and hope I don't get any "OH! you are still in the office? GREAT! Can you <#@$#@>?" I've been getting.

On the other hand, Comcast credited the whole month I haven't had net at home, which is a plus. They also said the cable box thing outside my building was all screwed up and they are sending another tech tomorrow. Here's hoping. The Sims 2 is NOT an appropriate substitute for ****. Smiley: mad

Update:

Quote:
Former firefighter Dave Ogden, who runs private firm Event Fire Services, was one of the first people at the scene of the crash.

He said: "We were down there with Top Gear who were filming him trying to break the British land speed record.

"On the previous run, the car had just gone over 300mph but I am not sure if it had broken the record.

"They had just done one more run and were planning to finish when it veered off to the right.

"One of the parachutes had deployed but it went on to the grass and spun over and over before coming to a rest about 100 yards from us."

He said his crew and an ambulance that was already on the airfield rushed over and found the car upside down and "dug in" to the grass.

Mr Ogden said he felt for a pulse and heard Mr Hammond breathing before the emergency crews worked together to turn the car the right way up and then cut him free.

He added: "He was regaining consciousness at that point and said he had some lower back pain. But he was drifting in and out of consciousness a little bit."

His condition has been reclassified from "critical" to "stable"

Oh, that's good.

That's one of those shows where you watch it thinking, "One of these days those crazy bastards are going to kill themselves." Glad it's not today.

Wasn't there a guy in the Darwin awards who died in a rocket-car crash?

You're thinking of this:

Quote:
Dodobird was tonight found dead in a gutter aftere his skateboard was involved in a 7mph wreck.

Apparently he hit n0bby's fist head on and suffered terminal sphincter injuries.

Dodobird leaves behind a 13 year old widow and 7 spastic children.

It looks as if he'll pull through, but with brain damage :((

Apparently, he was only filling in for a guy who chickened out at the last minute. Considering he has two little girls, it's incredibly sad.

As much as I dislike Jeremy Clarkson (who, when visiting Hammond in hospital, tried to cheer him up by telling him that he was a **** driver), I think Hammond was a great guy.

Very sad.

Written him off already?

James May had to withdraw a while ago. This 'last minute replacement' crap is just untrue.

And apparently he's showing signs of improvement. Digits still crossed for the Hamster

Another update. Hammond has now walked (shakily) and spoken a few times.

Quote:
His Top Gear co-presenter Jeremy Clarkson told yesterday how he was at Richard's bedside when he sat bolt upright in bed.

As he opened his eyes, the first thing he asked was:
"What has happened?"
Clarkson broke the news he had been in an accident. Richard asked:
"Was I driving like a ****?"
Smiley: lol

And my favoUrite part of Clarkson's interview:

Quote:
[Clarkson] also revealed that he, Richard and fellow host James May had made a joke pact should any of them die in a stunt, explaining:

"We decided that after the announcement of the death in the following week's show, the next word should be 'anyway'.

So if the Hamster had ever careered through the Pearly Gates in a 200mph fireball, I would put on a sombre face, say Richard Hammond had died and after a small pause, added:

'Anyway, the new Jag ....'

It was a sort of a joke. But then this week it sort of wasn't."
Nice Smiley: grin
