Venezuela has a huge population of dirt poor people. Chavez gave all the3 dirt poor people subsidaries and other free vote buying stuff after the last coup attempt in an effort to shore up his popularity. It worked. A huge section of his country thinks he is a complete waste of space. That and the whole vote rigging thing isn't helping. He thinks bush ordered the coup attempt for some reason, which given the wars we were already in at the time and the amount of oil we buy from venezuela would have been completely assenine on an entirely unporecedented scale if that were the truth.

He's just saying those things so he cane get some from iran...

I found this little gem last night. A friend and I found it great joint fodder.

"Infant mortality in Venezuela stands at over 22 deaths per 1000 births, a rate that places Venezuela behind Mexico, Panama, Colombia and many other countries of its region; for comparision the infant death rate is about eight times as high as Sweden. Child malnutrition (for children under age five) stands at about 17 percent of the population classified as stunted or wasted, which are the official United Nations categories for malnutrition. Areas more affected by the stunting and wasting include some of the poorest areas: Amacuro Delta (30%) and Amazonas (24%).[6]

According to the United Nations, the fraction of population without adequate sanitation is 32 percent, with a majority of people in many rural areas lacking in this basic commodity.[7] Travellers to Venezuela are advised to obtain vaccinations for a variety of diseases including typhoid, yellow fever, cholera, hepatitis A, hepatitis B and hepatitis D.[8] In a cholera epidemic of contemporary times in the Orinoco Delta, Venezuela's political leaders were accused of racial profiling of their own indigeneous people to deflect blame from the country's institutions, thereby aggravating the epicemic.[9] Visitors to Venezuela are advised to drink only bottled water, due to the prevalence of cross contamination of drinking water with untreated sewage. There are approximately 5,000,000 people in Venezuela living without access to safe drinking water, resulting in a percentage of population ranking of Venezuela among the poorest in South America.[10] As of the year 1999 there were an estimated 110,000 people in Venezuela living with HIV."

All of this has been a problem long before Chavez.

The U.S. has a long history of covert operations that changed the structure of many South and Central American countries, Chavez should be worried about a coup...

I believe it, but that doesn't mean he's excused from fixing it. All I'm saying is get your own house in some semblance of order before acting all heroic elsewhere. Start with toilets for your own people, then get back to us.

The same could be said about the US as well. We have people living below poverty level. Kids starving. But we turn a blind eye to it as long as it does affect us directly.

HMMM......

I see alot of Canadians and Euros posting on this thread. No real suprise I guess. Comments from other countries are laughable at best. Bottom line is this guy was grandstanding. Useless words to bolster his rep. In the end its useless. If he really wanted to hurt the U.S. he would cut off oil sales. Oh wait he can't. Oh and maybe Canada should do the same. Oh wait they can't. And maybe Germany should quit selling there industrial machinery and related goods to the U.S. Oh wait they can't. The bottom line is the rest of the world needs the worlds biggest economy. Euros are hilarious so quick to critisize American consumerism, but awful quick to sell us their goods. Same story with the rest of the world. Proping up their economies with U.S. Treasury bills. Absolutely kills me. Bottom line is when your king of the hill everyone wants to take you down. I forget the exact number but i believe the U.S. accounts for enormous part of the world's GNP. It makes me sad to see people proping up the this Chavez guy as a hero. He has done nothing but talk and will do nothing but talk. While I am not a Bush fan at least he does something. I like America. Been to Asia, Europe, Canada (many times). i dont want the U.S. to become any of these places. If I wanted to live in any them; I would move there. You all make me sad.
