An al-Qaida-linked extremist group warned Pope Benedict XVI on Monday that he and the West were "doomed," as protesters raged across the Muslim world to demand more of an apology from the pontiff for his remarks about Islam and violence.

The Mujahedeen Shura Council, an umbrella organization of Sunni Arab extremist groups that includes al-Qaida in Iraq, issued a statement on a Web forum vowing to continue its holy war against the West. The authenticity of the statement could not be independently verified.

The group said Muslims would be victorious and addressed the pope as "the worshipper of the cross" saying "you and the West are doomed as you can see from the defeat in Iraq, Afghanistan, Chechnya and elsewhere. ... We will break up the cross, spill the liquor and impose head tax, then the only thing acceptable is a conversion (to Islam) or (killed by) the sword."
[...]
The pope on Sunday said he was "deeply sorry" about the angry reaction to his speech last week in which he cited the words of a Byzantine emperor who characterized some of the teachings of Islam's Prophet Muhammad as "evil and inhuman" and referred to spreading Islam "by the sword."
Story

Nothing proves that you're not violent and spreading your faith by the sword quite like threatening violence and saying you're going to spread your faith by the sword.

Joph, you are clearly missing the point that they are saying that you can convert to Islam to save yourself from the wrath of the sword. Jeez, you damn liberals only see the negative side of things.

Remember the level of intellect that we are dealing with here. These Islamics have the IQ of a turnip.

Here's proof:

Quote:
NEW DELHI (Reuters) - The leaders of a village in the Indian state of Rajasthan ordered 150 men to dip their hands into boiling oil to prove their innocence after food was stolen from a local school, a newspaper reported Sunday.

In late August the school's principal informed police that rice and wheat had disappeared but no action was taken, the Sunday Express said.

The council, or panchayat, of Ranpur village, 340 km (210 miles) south of state capital Jaipur, then decided to take the law into its own hands.

After 10 days spent trying to identify those responsible, it issued what the paper called the "medieval diktat."

The 150 men from Ranpur and two neighboring hamlets were told to pick a copper ring from a cauldron of boiling oil. The council elders then announced that the 50 who refused the order must be behind the crime. Many are now nursing their burns.

"We would have been ostracized had we refused. Out of fear all of us agreed. This is not the first time this has been done," said one 45-year-old man. He has now testified against the elders, who have been arrested.

Yeah, a half-n-half is expensive enough as it is. A tax would ruin the market

What ticks me off is that Muslims the world over don't want to be thought of as the stereotypical close-minded reactionaries, and this is precisely how they are reacting. Benedict phrased himself in the worst way possible, but his point still stands: that spreading religion by the sword is an evil teaching, no matter who it's done by. He should include Christians in that statement, but if I have to take part of the blame for eradicating native cultures in the name of Jesus simply by my membership in the Church, if the Jewish people constantly get called to bat over the whole killing Christ thing, you bear *some* blame for the jihadists, Muslims, and ESPECIALLY when you refuse to honestly entertain other's view of your beliefs out of some misguided belief that You Alone hold the answers.

Honest dialogue and inclusive change among religious leaders is the only thing that can lead to a meeting of the minds. Sadly, Benedict has eliminated himself as a possible leader in this.

Yes, (Most of the Muslims were annexed in '47 with the creation of east and west Pakistan) but ISTR that Rajasthan is predominantly Sikh.

Can't we just genericise all faiths and condemn all religious types. Easier shorthand.

Just sayin'

Istanbul was Constantinople
Now it's Istanbul not Constantinople
Been a long time gone
Constantinople got the Turkish Delight
On a moonlit night

Every gal in Constantinople
Lives in Istanbul
Not Constantinople
So if you've a date in Constantinople
She'll be waiting in Istanbul

Even old New York
Was once New Amsterdam
Why they change it?
I can't say
People just liked it better that way

So take me back to Constantinople
No you can't go back to Constantinople
Been a long time gone, Constantinople
Why did Constantinople get the works?
That's nobody's business but the Turks'

Istanbul, Istanbul

Indeed. Or, since I can't say that most of them are reacting like this, there's a lack of response from the moderate community telling the fringe community to settle the fuck down.

Which is, I think, the most frustrating part. Be it in Iraq or Afghanistan or Lebanon whatever, you have a large population of Muslims who just want to be left alone to do their own thing and participate in the global market while retaining their own cultural and religious identity but few, it seems, are willing to adamantly state to the fringe elements "what you're doing runs contrary to what we want".

I'm not excusing the Pope. He said some dumb, inflammatory shit. But if someone started slandering me by saying "Jophiel waggles his dong at school children" then it would seem that the worst possible defense I could make would be "You better say you were wrong about that or else I'm going to go waggle my dong at some school children!"

Edit: and this is one **** poor effigy. It looks like they're burning the wire monkey mom-pope

The Pope's real problem is that he was the only one saying anything they didn't like at the time. Western media / politicians have always pussyfooted around with the Muslim religion when they should be jumping on with both feet.

We give them way to few targets to get upset with, we should be making them grow the hell up by verbally ***** slapping them repeatedly. And it should come from everywhere.

5 or 10 Mohammad cartoons? We should be pumping out 12 a week per country. This lingering "we're Muslim and you can't talk about us that way" **** needs to be pounded out of them. You can't do that by coddling them.

Not at all, haven't been religious in twenty years and I'm no where close to being conservative. I just don't see the value in supporting the riot and kill people mind set when you hear someone dis your religion. I'm not talking about the use of force, I am talking about not catering to it. And yes I feel that way about all religions. Talking about them should be fair game.

If the Muslim world wants to riot about American foreign policy or wrongs done them in detail, more power to them, but holding everyone else to their religious standards needs stepping on.

you're a regular reader of the Muslim press?

Thought not.

Ironically Islamists have been the roadblcok here

Very interesting how both sides of the issue speak so similarly. There's a string of comments on this story. Some calling for peace. Some calling for hatred. Same old story, different side of the world.
