Saw this last night and shuddered. The video scared me the most though, when watching the kids reactions:

Kids being trained to fight for Jesus
Quote:

An in-your-face documentary out this weekend is raising eyebrows, raising hackles and raising questions about evangelizing to young people.

Speaking in tongues, weeping for salvation, praying for an end to abortion and worshipping a picture of President Bush — these are some of the activities at Pastor Becky Fischer's Bible camp in North Dakota, "Kids on Fire," subject of the provocative new documentary, "Jesus Camp."

"I want to see them as radically laying down their lives for the gospel as they are in Palestine, Pakistan and all those different places," Fisher said. "Because, excuse me, we have the truth."

"A lot of people die for God," one camper said, "and they're not afraid."

"We're kinda being trained to be warriors," said another, "only in a funner way."

The film has caused a split among evangelicals. Some say it's designed to demonize. Others have embraced it, including Fischer, who's helping promote the film.

"I never felt at any point that I was exploited," Fischer said.

"I think there is a push right now in a lot of evangelical churches to definitely keep the teenagers and keep the children in the faith," said Heidi Ewing, co-director of "Jesus Camp." "And this is one version of that attempt."...

It continues for two pages if you're interested in the entire article. While I am not religious myself, I still have respect for those who make their own choices. And I can see normal Bible camp being a place where young kids of Christian faith go to enjoy the company of others while learning about their God. But this is so extreme! Here we are as a country, having been rocked from our feeling of safety only 5 years ago by people who were so into their faith and what they believed that they felt the need to destroy anything that opposed them. And we have been "fighting" against religious terrorists since then. But in our own country, it sounds as if some are creating their own little army. And it's "ok" because it's the "right faith".

When you have 5 and 6 yr olds worshipping the president and calling themselves warriors for Jesus, I would think that should be ringing major alarm bells.

Try and watch the film if you can. While the article makes an impact, it doesnt come as close to capturing the full scope as the video does.

Last night Focus on the Family beheaded seventy virgins outside the lone theater in town showing this flick. While not true, that would've been more appropriate than the overt whining I witnessed on my local news last night. Somehow they managed to twist the sensible public's disgusted reaction to this film into another example of the man trying to keep the WASP down. Them wacky fundamentalists, I'm not sure where or if we have a mosque in town, but I'm pretty sure that's from whence the evil emanates, not the picture show.

When I was in Highschool I knew this religous kid who sold candy bars, we where both in debate. One time he had asked me if I wanted to go to church group on a wendsday night, so I agree (He knew that I was looking for a new church to go to and I generally like religon) So I met him there and went in, they had a bunch of x-boxs, PS2's, Pool tables and couchs. Looked pretty layed back.

So we hang out for about 15 minutes then they tell everyone to find a seat in the chairs for sermon, I was like "Cool I can finally find out what this church is about" So it's the basic "I'm a hip 20 year old and jesus loves me type guy" Then all of a sudden everyone gets up and walks towards the stand and they all start rolling around on the floor and crying and ****. I was so scared at that point seeing as how I was the only person sitting in the chairs watching 80+ Teenagers rolling around on the floor.

I just walked out at the point.

Speaking in tongues
I attended a few services at a local church where this was common. It is one of the weirdest thing I've ever witnessed. The most dumbfounding thing to me is that when one person jumps up speaking gibberish, 1 or more other people stand up and start screaming the translation. I'm sitting there the whole time wondering why God doesn't just deliver the message in English.

I also have a vague memory of seeing this at an Assembly of God church (commonly abbreviated ***. of God) when I was younger. I remember it scared me a lot as a kid.

I consider myself a Christian but I have little interest in churches because of crap like this.

Don't laugh, there is a serious theological debate on the basic premises in the bible that prevents just such fundamentalism in Christians. It involves the dead sea scrolls, the apostle saul, the roman empire and changes to the bible made to make it pacifistic and whether now would be the time to undo those changes and what the results would be.

Basically speaking Saul and the first christians changed the ten comandments from Thou shalt not murder to Thou shalt not kill, to make christianity more appealing to the romans. This was always thought to be a translation error by modern scholars, but the dead sea scrolls say it was on purpose and other pacifistic parts of the bible are fabricated to placate the Romans. If the church were to embrace these changes, what effect would it have on fundamentalist christians and the urge to bloweth up thyn enemies?

I forgot to mention in my previous post that I would totally bang Lauren Sandler, a secular, liberal feminist from New York City. Might have gone without saying, but I said it, anyway.

I always get very scared when I read things like that. You can't reason with statements like that. You can try, but they're not interested.

I sure hope the FBI is keeping tabs on groups like this. The Neo-*****, KKK and ELF don't scare me anywhere near as much as this one. I can only imagine the horror if one of these groups somehow got a controlling interest in the government.

Hello theocracy.

Anyone else also notice the phrase " worshipping a picture of President Bush" added in there? I always though false idols was against Christian religion.

There just seems to be so much wrong with this. It sounds like extreme brainwashing going on, adding in to the mix that these kids are being taught that they are training to be Christian warriors. If this does go unchecked, I could feasibly seeing us having our own little christian Jihad starting up in a few years. But who would have the authority to check this? Other churches? The govt? The people?

Unbelievable that in the 21st Century we're on the brink of war over religion.

Imagine what might happen if a Republican even more slanted towards the Christian Right got into power and in control of the U.S. military. It's not out of the realm of possibility that a radically fundamentalist Christian could gain some measure of control over the American ******** You think Bush is scary. Pfft...

How's a 5 or 6 year old supposed to know if they are being exploited or not?

Dunno, but it was the pastor who said she wasn't being exploited?

Ya, it was the pastor who said it. After watching the video it could easily have been one of the kids, though.

This is exactly the kind of shit that makes me wonder if bringing a kid into this world was the smart thing to do. Older Teens & Adults are one thing, but children are so emotionally relentless growing up socially that this just stinks of dividing children throughout the younger ages based on ridiculous religious upbringing. This is the scariest thing I've ever seen regarding religion in the US.
