The next stupid CA law.Follow

Beginning July 1, 2008 it will be unlawful to talk on a cell phone while driving unless using a headsat or speaker phone.

Article

I think that it is a subject that a lot of people talk about because cell phones have been a bigger cause for traffic accidents and death than drunk driving,

Consumer Affairs and other non-profit groups have done tests which show it was the focus on the conversation, instead of the the driving, that was the leading contributor to accidents.

Quote:
Supporters, including insurance companies and law enforcement groups, say the ban removes physical distractions, mainly when a driver has to use one hand to hold the phone to his or her ear.

Just cause you aren't holding the phone to your ear, doesn't mean your focused on driving.

They should ban talking on phone devices of any nature while driving through out the country. I have been nearly hit at least a dozen times by dumbasses driving while talking. They can't function correctly while talking. >.<;

Hm....

Ok, shock nodes installed in the seats so that all you have to do is press one of two buttons- one button for warning shock, other button for punishment shock.

I don't think it's a stupid law at all. People are less attentive to driving while on a cell phone. /shrug

I do tend to agree that the headset won't help very much. The problem is not so much the lack of hands as the lack of attention. For whatever reason it's easier (though not easy) to multi-task while talking directly to a person than while talking on the phone. You know you have to filter noise and distraction while talking on the phone, and unfortunately you filter noises and distractions to which, as a driver, you should be paying attention.

If this wasn't related to, you know, actually operating your vehicle in a safe fashion, I'd be upset too! Smiley: tongue

Actually, I suprised it took CA this long. Chicago's had a headset law since 2004 or '05. I figured they were par for the course in most places.

One of my co-workers is Ms. Multi-tasking when she drives. I will never drive in the car with her again as she did the following when I was in the passenger seat: 1) Talked on her cell phone using the speaker; 2) put her make up on; 3) drank her Starbucks; and 4) had a textbook on her lap because she was studying for her class that night.

When she stopped at a red light, I got out of the car and called another co-worker and told her to come get me.

Forget the sore jaw, it's the crick in the neck that's the killer.

News Flash! This law has been in affect in several places for a few years. I fully support it.
