Who's playing this?

Quote:
"Second Life" is a three-dimensional software world on the Web inhabited by animated characters that users design for themselves to interact with other participants. Users buy and sell virtual land and build businesses with currency called "Linden Dollars," which can be exchanged for real currency.

Blurring the line between a multiplayer game and an online business, the popularity of the site has spurred Fortune 500 corporations such as Coca-Cola and Wells Fargo, along with architects, authors and musicians to erect virtual outposts of their organizations or personas.

Retailer American Apparel has created a business to sell clothing for the "Second Life" avatars users create to represent themselves inside the online world. Musicians such as Duran Duran and Suzanne Vega have held concerts inside "Second Life."

The site itself wrote:
"Residents of one of the Internet's most populous virtual worlds shop, attend class—even run businesses. Soon you may do the same."
Is this like the Sims, or is it more business-related? There's even an under-18 version (hell of an idea).

I read about it when it came out, thought "Huh, interesting idea", and never thought about it again until just now.

Huh, interesting idea.

Fleajo no offense but I like my version of your avatar better. I'll be damned if I can remember where I found it.

I think I heard about this on the radio a few months ago.

It's an MMORPG that TOTALLY encourages RMT.

Apparently a guy in the game got himself a space station club and made alot of of real money with it.

crazy

yeah, here it is http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/4766755.stm

Different game.

So yeah, I logged onto Second Life just this weekend as it happens. I had read a lot about it in the press so decided to go check it out. My thoughts were:

1) I found it pretty laggy (I was uploading some photos at the same time, which might explain it)
2) There is not real objective or point to the game
3) You can just port wherever you want to go, so exploring or getting a sense of direction doesn't really happen
4) There are a lot of sexual services on offer
5) You would need to be a pretty good graphic designer / animator to get much out of the game
