Standard unofficial rules here in Ma, you creep a bit into the intersection and as soon as its clear you turn, even if it just turned red. I will do this in areas I know but if I dont know the area I tend to hang back and wait.

What usually happens around here, and with increasing frequency over the last decade, is that the car doesn't wait to make the left, he simply floors it when the light turns green and darts across the intersection before the oncoming traffic can start moving.

Which is clearly a violation of the whole "yield the right of way to oncoming traffic" idea, but I've seen it done a dozen times right in front of village, town, county and state cops, and didn't see any of the offenders pulled over.

Well, yeah. You think the cop is going to risk their life duplicating that turn?

Laws can vary quite a bit from state to state or province to province on stupid little stuff like that.

Just like how it's legal to make a right hand turn at a red light in Ontario but it's not in Quebec (I'm pretty sure, anyway).

Creep into the intersection, turn when you can.

Speaking of taking a right hand turn on a red light, whats the thought about taking a right hand turn when you have a red right pointing arrow? I figure if they took the time to make it a red right arrow, then its pretty damn obvious that they do not want you to make a right hand turn when the light is red. However, the husband argues with me over this, and if no cars are coming, will take a right.

When taking my driving test many moons ago, I was told by the test taker that you should move into the intersection and wait for an opening (even to the point of finishing on the red if no opening presents itself). Which was exactly what I'd been taught, but when actually taking the test, I wasn't 100% sure, so I stayed at the line and couldn't make the left turn during the test.

Given that he was running the driving test, I'm going to assume it's what you're supposed to do in that situation. My assumption is that the interpretation of the law allows you to move out on the green and wait for an opening. It's legal since you moved out on the green, and there was enough time to cross the intersection (make a left turn in this case). You just needed to wait for an opening to do so safely (the turn. the pull out is "safe").

I always use that technique and have never had a problem with it. In California if you *don't* use it, you'll never make some turns and be stuck there forever.

I'd check your state laws, but I'd assume that a red right turn arrow is the same as a "no turn on red" sign. Meaning that he'll get a ticket if he turns. You typically see those on blind intersections, so he's taking his own life in his hands doing it to boot.

The one I always love (and that confuses some drivers) is when there's two right turn lanes. You'd be surprised how many people assume you can only make a right turn on a red if you're in the far right lane. But if there are two or more dedicated right turn lanes, you can be a lane to the left and still make that right turn if traffic is clear. I've had lots of people just sit in those lanes, unsure of what to do.

Pull out into the intersection, waiting for a chance to turn left and completing your turn on the red light if need be:

but that depends on the state law.

IIRC there are some states it is against the law to pull in to the intersection and stop waiting for a chance to make the turn and you must stay behind the line. in FL and IL you can pull into the intersection and that is how i drive.

That happens so often that I dont' even think about it, I just get in the right most one of the two because I just know otherwise I will be sitting there waiting till the green light and the morans in front of me go.

I never pull into the intersection and wait for a gap. I live in a small town and if there is going to be a gap you can see it coming and be ready to make the turn. If you pull into the intersection and it turns red before you find a gap, you can get a ticket. I've seen it happen.

If I'm sitting behind the line and someone honks at me, it isn't going to make me pull into the intersection. If you don't like the way I'm driving, go around me or something and get the ticket yourself.
