From that selection of nuts and cams, do I deduce that you're a Free Climber?

That's some sweeeet protection kit there.

I'm a huge fan of Joe Brown, Don Whillans (RIP) and Isabelle La Patissier (I saw a couple of her exhibition pitches, and spent an awesome day climbing with Mr Whillans about 25 years ago before I became a lardy-***** couch potato and he stopped breathing)

Yup, going on 3 1/2 years now. I really don't enjoy bouldering much. I'm happiest when I'm a few hundred feet off the ground.

I'm guessing you climbed on gritstone? That there is some scary **** from what I've heard. There's a reason the Brits have an adage: "The leader must not fall!".

Can't say I recognize any of the names you mentioned.

For all you climbing n00bs, free climbing is not the same as free soloing. I like my life, thanks. Free climbing is just climbing without the aid of gear to help you go up. If anything, all that crap I carry hinders me. It's just there to use so when I fall, I don't deck.

Mostly gritstone here in England and Basalt & Granite in Scotland (the Cuillins on the Isle of Skye mostly). Nasty slate in Wales Smiley: frown

I was into Free Climbing for about 4 years, then Free Soloing for about 3 months (I was a nutter and by rights should have gone the way of Stever Irwin).

It ended in '84 with an incident in Scotland (Sgurr Alasdair in the Black Cuillin on Skye) involving a sudden and unexpected terror of heights. First time ever I'd experienced it and I froze for about an hour at about 700m.
Then it started pissing down and it took me til dusk to get down.

After that I tried bouldering for a while but by then I'd lost the fitness and nerve.

Not climbed since Smiley: cry.

Joe Brown and Don Whillans were the kings of european Alpinism from the 60s to 80s (Don was part of the Brit Everest team but his drinking got in the way of climbing - he invented the Whillans Harness known as the "Beer belly Transporter")

La Patissier was queen of 80s and 90s Free Solo stuff - extreeeeeem (and fit as a Butcher's Dog)

I'm still terrified of heights. I can't be near the edge of a cliff without a harness and safety leash.

That's part of the reason I dislike bouldering. A lot of the problems top out or finish at a height that I'm uncomfortable with falling from.

Now, a clean 20 to 30ft fall? Ya, I don't mind that. I don't do it on purpose, but I don't mind it.

I used to do a fair amount of climbing back in high school and enjoyed the hell out of it. Unfortunately, in the gym there was a practice wall and since I considered myself "so good" I went up without a harness, and fell. Four feet. And broke my foot! I had to have pins put in and everything...who ever heard of doing that falling....four feet. Very bad luck, and I haven't been able to climb since. Putting all of my weight on my toes is painful.

Yup, stories like that is why I dislike bouldering above a few feet.

I struggle enough with finger injuries. I don't need to deal with ankle and knee problems too from climbing.

Now that this thread was brought back to life, I can only surmise that Steve Irwin was smothered to death between giant heaving breastesses.
