If you appear to have a shortage of hands when driving a manual transmission, learn to steer with your knees. This can be done, even when manipulating the three pedals.

Flea, when did VA -> DC count as cross-country? Smiley: dubious

Finally, my suggestion would be to ge a Saturn (with manual). I loved mine!

I dunno, you just have more control over the vehicle.
How much control over my vehicle do I need when slogging along at 25mph down I-55 in the morning?

Flea drives stick and it's more work than I care to put into getting from here to there.

That's also why I said I'd more than likely get an automatic if I ever had to drive in Toronto rush hour often. I said that somewhere I think? If not, I should have!

Stop and go traffic is teh sux.

***** getting a car. For $14k you can get a brand new BMW motorcycle or a Yammie FJR. Cages are for losers.

Do you understand how hard it is to push the pedals with your hands while eating a bowl of cereal with your knees?

I fail to see your assload of savings, paying 60-120 for brakes every 2-4 years versus 4 to 8 years is not what I would consider substantial enough to purchase one vehicle over another.

The difference in cost for the car to begin with is reason enough to go for standard transmission.

Stick shift driving is a lost art. Granted, in commuter traffic it's gax, but driving isn't really driving unless you're winding the car up and down through the gears.

I seriously suspect that the teenage driving accident rate would drop tremendously if they were forced to drive a manual. No hands to jabber on the cell phone, tune the radio, apply mascara, and read Cosmo when you're busy shifting.

My dad made it a point to teach his four children the art of the stick-shift when we were all teens. Unfortunately only half of us retained that knowledge and have owned our own manual-tranny cars.

I've asked her to gift $10k, as you can do so without paying taxes,

The 10K (recently changed to 11K) annual limit on gift/estate taxes only applies IF you've surpassed the lifetime limit on gifts from that person. So unless your mom has given you more than 1.5 million, (in which case you would not be talking about these numbers on the car, or maybe your a meth head and you've smoked the 1.5 million?) there would be no gift tax on the amount over 11K, you can read more on it here.
The only other concern is if your share of your mom's potential estate is worth near 1.5 million, then it might be better to limit "provable" gifts to 11K. So she can give 11K this year and 3K next, or 11K this year by check and 3K in cash (or drugs, you meth head.)Smiley: drunk

If your share of your mom's potential estate is greater than 1.5 million, then please link some pics of your mom.Smiley: wink2

That's not going to keep them from trying.

You know, you'd be frightened if I told you how much I do while driving. However, I've only ever been in one accident that was my fault, and that was in an automatic. Seems I get bored.

Meh, I like my Ford Focus. For 14K (this was back when they offered their employee discount to everyone) I have a 6 disc MP3 player, heated seats, cruise control, blah blah blah. Basically, I got what I consider a fairly nice car for not so much money. It hasn't died on me yet, and if it did, I have a 100,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty (you have to pay extra...it was like 1,000 bucks or something, I included that in the 14K).

Oh, and GFY for complaining about a free car.
