I have this good friend that I see at the pub fairly frequently. Quite the charmer he is; the type of guy that can saunter up to a gaggle of womens and walk away five minutes later with a fistful of numbers if he so chose. About average in the looks department but he has a British accent that American women seem to adore. He's married and I've never seen him leave with another woman or even appear to be trying to pick them up at the bar, but night after night the chances of a single woman walking through that door at the end of the evening without having been chatted up by this man, regardless if they came alone, with other women, or with male companion, is exceedingly slim.

After you get a few drinks in him he tends to get a bit more flirtatious but still keeps it inocent enough; however, he does have this strange habit of greeting certain women with a kiss of the hand. It's never excessive and usually only one to two ladies a night. It is an interesting thing to see though, as some women seem to almost visibly get weak in the knees at this gesture.

I've read a what little I can find on it and it appears that in American culture the greeting has been romanticized considerably compared it's European origin as a sign of respect. Personally, I've never really felt comfortable greeting ladies this way as I tend to also hold this notion of it being a bit forward, perhaps even rude. Yet not a single instance have I seen any of the women act uneasy or offended at this action. Maybe it's because with just the right amount of social lubrication such things are more easily accepted?

Kissing a woman's hand as a greeting?
Great idea! It makes guys look so debonaire.:4 (7.8%)
Bad idea. It's an antiquated custom and an affected mannerism. Makes guys look creepy.:8 (15.7%)
May at times be appropriate, but only in certain context(not including royalty).:25 (49.0%)
Pie . . . make that wombat pie. :14 (27.5%)
Total:51

I don't do it but I'm not entirely against the idea. But it'd have to fit into the greater context of your personality. Being a regular dude who kisses hands will just get you known as that weird *** dude who kisses hands.

I don't particularly care for getting a peck on my hand. Some guys can pull it off, but a lot of guys are kind of creepy when they do it, and some tend to leer at you while doing it also.

Yuck.

I enjoy it if I know the person, or if I can tell it's meant as a gallantry. IMHO, men don't do this sort of thing enough. I'm a gurly girl, and I enjoy like hell getting treated like one. I met this older gentleman that sang in a mariachi group once, and he bought me a drink, sang me a bolero, and kissed my hand. We also danced once, and he kissed my hand at the end. A younger genteleman from the same band also danced with me, with the same gesture at the end. Both times it meant nothing, led to nothing, and gifted me with that warm feeling of being treated like a special lady.

The only time I would think it's inappropriate if it's someone from work, or some slimey guy that's using it to try to get into my pants.

Yeah. I have a friend who does this and while it is charming in an odd way, it's also a little self conscious and weird.

American men under the age of 40 probably can't pull this off very well, in general. And here's a tip, for those of you who want to try anyway: your lips should not actually touch her hand; or if they do - which is pretty darn forward - it should be the merest brush. No slobber, please.

You know, one of the true annoyances of having outed ourselves as a couple are comments like these.

/seconded.

Since I was more of a "average joe 6pack", I never felt I could pull it off. My brother, who is more of the "outgoing frat guy" charmer has pulled that off with success every time we are at a bar.

You have to be the right sort of guy to make this work. Sorta flamboyant and flirty with a healthy dose of old-world courtly charm. If you are that guy, it's unquestionably swoon-worthy. If you're not, it's just a corny affectation and shouldn't be attempted. Ever.

I once had my hand kissed by the "right kind of guy" before. And yes, he definitely got my number. And pretty much anything else he asked for as well.

Of course, that was before I was an old married woman...*sigh*...

Every time I've personally witnessed it, my impression was that it was pompous and creepy. I'd never try it myself, unless it was intended as a joke.

The majority of men would not be able to pull this off correctly, but if you are one of the few who posses that certain "oomph" and style, it could be a charmer. Echoing Sam, don't slobber on the hand. Barely brush it with your lips, closed please.

So you're saying that sucking on her fingers is a bit too much?
