So I'm listening to the local zany morning show, and they're harping on the new season of Survivor. It seems like they needed something to spice the show up after umpteen seasons of starving them and giving them heart attacks, so the producer decided it would be a lark to subdivide the usual teams using a new criteria: race.

'Survivor: Cook Islands' to organize tribes along ethnic lines
ASSOCIATED PRESS
08/23/2006

NEW YORK (AP) -- The new season of "Survivor" will be a race among races.

At the start of the reality show's 13th edition, "Survivor: Cook Islands," 20 contestants will be organized into four tribes divided along ethnic lines -- black, white, Hispanic and Asian, CBS announced Wednesday.

The tribes, as usual, will merge later in the season, which debuts Sept. 14, the network said.

Jeff Probst, host of the show, said the network was worried the racial divide might offend viewers.

"It's very risky because you're bringing up a topic that is a hot button," Probst told asap, The Associated Press service for younger readers. "There's a history of segregation you can't ignore. It is part of our history."

"For that, it's much safer to say, `No, let's just stick with things the way they are. Let's don't be the network to rock the boat. Let's not have "Survivor" try something new,"' he said. "But the biases from home can't affect you. This is an equal opportunity game."

Probst said he and the "Survivor" producers wanted to bring more ethnic diversity to the competition.

"The truth is 80 percent of the people that apply are white," he said. "And television, in general, is white. So all these criticisms were valid."

On each episode of "Survivor: Cook Islands," at least one cast member will be sent to a separate island miles away from camp, where an immunity idol will be hidden. If found, this immunity idol could save a contestant from being voted off the show.
So there was all this talk of how this would enable racial slurs and sterotypes, and also the more 'dangerous' (that word kept coming up) idea that somehow, this was supposed to prove which was the 'better' race.

Although I suppose that the producers just wanted to get the show back in the public eye again and get it talked about (which I suppose they have accomplished), it seems a pretty sad ploy, and it wouldn't make me want to watch any more. However, I am disturbed by the fact that if this proves anything, is that race is still an underground powder keg, and I'm not sure that it's precisely the way the nation should have this conversation. Thoughts?

Pulezz! The Asians will win all the puzzle challenges, and the hispanics will steal the physical challenges from the blacks.

How many racial groups are they going to identify to do this and are they going to let some of the "mixed" ones choose which group they identify with? I can see some ugly behavior coming out!

"Mixed" races have no place on tv. Survivor is all about purity, it could hardly be a legitimate show otherwise.

Was I sick the week in history class when they discussed the Congo Conference on how the African tribes should partition Europe, the Pacific Rim's efforts to set up mercantile outposts in the North Sea and the Aztec conquest of Spain?

BOO-YAH! GAME OVER!!

Four, and I suppose they'll only pick contestants that identify with a particular group. I'm not familiar enough with the show to know whether they tell them this kind of thing beforehand or not.

If so, then your race is obviously inferior? I suppose I'll let you have this point.

This reminds me of the fiasco that ensued when Jimmy the Greek mentioned that black slaves were bred for physical attributes.

I'm not sure that comment would go over well nowadays either.

Sports Illustrated had a very good and valid scientific article on why blacks are better runners than people of different ethnic backgrounds. It was published in 1971. I know I have a copy of it somewhere around here but I'm way too lazy to find it. Ah, here we go. Found it in a few bibliographies. "Sports Illustrated 1971; 43:72-83".

Cause the cops are behind them?

Why are people making such a big deal over this? The producers could have just as easily decided to seperate the teams by what season they were born in, which the person has just as much control over.

Because while the race is, like you say, a crapshoot, the decision to use it as the defining statute for separating folks was someone's conscious choice.

But you should only be offended if you believe that seperating the teams by "race" would give teams advantages and disadvantages. If everyone is equal, then seperating them by "race" shouldn't matter. If the "races" are different, why would it matter, unless you feel the "race" you identify with is inferior to all the other groups.

Either that or you get offended because it is the PC thing to do.

Separate but equal, eh? What a novel idea! Smiley: laugh

And for the record, I don't get offended at anything other than asshats with their heads in the sand that try to pretend it's not an issue.

It didn't.

We were brought over here because we could work in the heat. Isn't that history? Your skin color is more conducive to heat than it is to the lighter-skinned people. I don't see brothers running around burnt. That's a fact. I'm not making this up. I'm not seeing some brothers walking around with some white stuff on their ears and noses.

Long ago, Germans were organized in tribes.

(So were 90% of other races but that is a whole different topic)

If I was calling it seperate but equal then the show would never have planned to combine the various groups throughout the show. If it was to be seperate but equal, then they would have had four shows.

I am saying it is a non-issue because:
a) I don't believe in the idea of different races.
b) The arbitrary groups they selected have no differences other than skin color.
c) It is just a ratings ploy.

Why do you feel it is an issue? To me, it seems that you are either upset because you feel one group is more gifted than another or you are so damn PC that any mention of "race" throws you into a frenzy. Which is it?
