..and I've decided that all people are idiots.

Today, a woman came in who decided that she was going to get a free can of gingerale. She came in grabbed it, had me scan it, and then spent 10 minutes bartering with me over the price. There are 4 people in line behind her, and she's sitting here, trying to convince me to let her buy a $1.36 can of gingerale, for $0.50(this is all in Canadian). Eventually she decided to pay me and went on her way.

I've also had to hear some of the dumbest questions, it's almost like it's out of the movie "clerks". Some of them are:

"Do you sell cigarettes?"

The entire wall behind the counter is full from floor to ceiling with assorted brands and sizes of cigarettes. I think this might be the dumbest question I've heard since working there.

"Do you accept hundred dollar bills?"

There are no less than three ******* signs saying, "We do not accept $100 & $50 bills", it's one of the most annoying ******* thingsI have to deal with on a daily basis.

"Do you sell Pepsi?"

No we don't sell one of the most profitable items in existance in a convenience store controlled by a semi-major chain of convenience stores. Why would we want to make money?

"How much for a three dollar lottery ticket?"

I kid you not, I have been asked this question.

"The tax is too high, I want you to take it off"

another ridiculous one...Smiley: disappointed

I seriously want to punch everyone who walks into that store in the face now...

Edited for the ability to make sense

I had a guest at one of my tables tonight ask "Do you have to leave a tip?"

I almost stabbed her in the eye with a fork. She didn't leave a tip.

I don't tip because society says I have to tip. If she's good, if she really puts forth the effort, then I'll give her a little extra. But this tipping automatically? It's for the birds.

Oddly enough I had to make this same speech when an EQ guildie ragged me for not tipping when he buffed me!

Unless the service or food was horrendous there is never a reason not to tip. You have to be a cheap skate well fare recipient with no sense of pride not to tip (that cover you debalic?).

I still remember the time when I was cooking that a the waitress served a large table that clocked in a 400$ bill on food and drinks. We pumped the food out fast, she was nothing but cordial and polite. The people left a 10 dollar tip, I remember that the waitress cried.

See with servers they don't make their earnings from wages, in fact they usually get paid less than minimum wage. All their bank comes from gratuities that are supposed to reflect the service they provide the customer. Thus causing the poor servers to find a new line of work and encouraging the good to be better. This person has gone the extra mile to give you good service and you shaft them. It would be like the putting in overtime and extra shifts at work and not getting a raise.

That was indeed from Reservoir Dogs, as spoken by Mr. Pink played by Steve Buscemi. And not my personal philosophy, bodhi.

Yes, not sure how you do the wages up north but waitresses make I believe 2.36 or somesuch per hour. If they don't make regular minimum wage, the business is supposed to cover the remaining amount to average, hence the reporting of tips. If you don't report your tips accurately, as i'm sure a large percentage of people don't, you basicall get screwed when you slave over a group of people and get shit on.

I always tip. How much depends on service.

IMO dumbest question I was ever asked while working at Walgreens:

Me: Do you need a bag for these? (two very small items, 20oz soda and roll of tape)

Elderlady: (disgruntled tone) Well how do you expect me to carry them?

Me: With your hands?

(Begin awkward silence)

I do Gateway/eMachine tech support, I freaking hate talking to MMO'ers. They're all morons, I ask them to do something broad like go to control panel, not giving the smallest hint of what we're doing. The little fuckers always say "I've already done that!"

I've already have gotten like 2x calls like that this morning.

The standard here in the States is that parties of more than six or eight (depending on restaurant) have a 15-20% gratutity (again, restaurant dependant) automatically added to the bill. At least this way the server doesn't waste all night tending to a single table of fifteen rowdies just to get stiffed at closing time.

I rarely tip under 15% and don't think that I ever left no tip. I've left some appropriately shitty ones for likewise shitty service.

I usually tip between 10 and 20 percent, but if the waiter/waitress has been rude, or ****** and/or if the food wasn't all that great I'll either leave a .5% tip or no tip.

My co-workers and I have gotten into some heated discussions about tipping. I always tip at least 15% and I've gone as high as 50% when the service was spectacular. And whenever we go out to eat and split the check, I'm the one that takes care of the tip. If my coworkers don't leave enough of their share, I'll make it up. I also give tips to the delivery people when we order our lunches and have them delivered to the office. That's when my coworkers object. They don't understand why I would tip the delivery people. My coworkers never put in for tipping the delivery people. But I'll always give an extra couple of bucks.

But then again, whenever my coworkers want something extra or special ordered from any of the local restaurants, they ask me to call because they know I'll be acoomodated. Heh, you would have thought they would have figured out why by now.

I read somewhere that if you want to let a bartender know that you think you got shitty service, you're supposed to tip a nickle. This was some universally understood concept among bartenders. I don't know about that, but it's effective.

10-20% unless the service is bad. Then it's no tip time. The last time I did that was when it took them 45 minutes to get our food out. Ate, paid, left.

The only time I don't tip is when I pick up take-out. Even if they aren't the best server in the world, they still get 15%. It only goes up from there. Smiley: wink

Speaking of which, I manage (not own) a sub shop. I feel very bad for my employees, they make around 6.50-7.25/hour and depend on tips to somewhat balance it out. Keep in mind that they have to drive around on a lot of single delivery orders. City driving burns up lots of gas for em. I'm pretty sure that some nights, they have to pay in for gas (they get a measly .25/delivery). By delivering, they're offering you a service, call or place your order online and we bring you food. All you have to do is walk to door.

When you appretiate a service, you reciprocate that in some way, in this case by giving the driver a gratuity. If you don't tip and frequent an establishment, I guarantee you will probably receive very poor service in the future. Or you'll find yourself at the back of the delivery que.

We quote a time range for a reason.

I try not to base my tips too heavily upon the kitchen staff or slow service on a busy Saturday night and other things outside the control of the server.

But, of course, if I tell the server "My steak is well done when I ordered it rare and my green beans are ice cold" and the server huffs about it, then that's a problem reflected in the tip. If the food is just crappy, I just don't go back to that restaurant.

It'll be a cold day in hell before I leave a tip in one of those cups sitting on the counter of the coffee stand or frozen yogurt shoppe. Why in God's name do you deserve a special gratuity for doing the exact same service they're doing at McDonald's? Particularly after you just dinged me $2.95 for a cup of coffee. Tell the boys in Seattle to pay you more; they can afford it.

True dat.

As for delivery it depends entirely on how fast they get there. Also had a guy when I went to give him two twenties complained about not having change so I had to run around and find the change. He got no tip.

You are all ignoring the single most offensive tipping practice in existence.

Strippers. What is up with a lap-dance being priced at fifteen dollars and then still demanding a fifteen dollar tip? Just tell me up front it's thirty bucks. I'm already paying eighteen dollars a pop for a pitcher of beer, why do you succubi need yet more of my flesh? I know books are expensive, but I just can't stand the deception.

I'm English so the entire mentality on tipping is different, but i only tip if i get noticably good service.

Want more money?

Get a better job.

Can't get a better job?

Should have worked harder at school.

This is tempered by the fact that in England anyone who works hard at school can get a degree and earn $50,000+ a year. So if your in the position that the best job you can get is a minimum wage waitor it's generally speaking your own damn fault.

Add in that most people in this field are students and are only doing it for extra beer money.

Actually, some of us are working so that we can pay for tuition, books, insurance, etc.

My hourly wage is less than minimum wage because servers are considered "tipped employees." If you don't tip your waiter, you're not only telling them that they were absolutely horrible, but you're seriously cutting in to their income. You just took up one of their tables for an hour and a half, ran them back and forth, and you couldn't throw down a few bucks at the end?

As a waiter, I always tip at least 15% when I go out to eat, and that's only if the service was bad. Usually, it's more like 20-25%.

Not in England.

In England if you don't tip you aren't telling them anything, it's not expected.

If you do tip them you are rewarding exceptional effort.

I rarely expect or recieve exceptional effort from waitors so i rarely tip.

I bust a ******* every day at work, i get sent away from home for months at a time in terrible living condidtions with no overtime, i don't get tips. so i don't see why some part timer who gets to go home every night and gets paid by the hour should somehow be automaticly paid extra regardless of service.
