[NWS] A glimpse into the psyche of AOL usersFollow

Admin edit: Loading this thread at a monitored workplace will likely get you fired due to the links contained below.

As a way to pass time on a Friday, take a gander into the psyche of AOL users who had their search queries made public by AOL. As you might recall, AOL recently made a block of search queries public and identified the searching parties by an ID number. When it became apparent that many ID numbers were still linkable to the original users (people searching for their own names, etc), AOL pulled the data but the horse had already fled the barn.

DontDelete.com has the data archived and a "random" button to bring up the query history of a random user. It has that addictive blend of voyeurism and complete lack of effort on your part to blow time until lunch.

There's a perplexing number of people who don't seem to understand URLs. I understand the concept of searching for a URL so you can click it and keep it out of your URL bar's history (I used to do it at work before I just set my history to 0 days) but there's people searching for things like:

www.cats and dogs.com

Spaces and all Smiley: dubious

a good 45% of randoms came up with Google.com. Why the fUck do they search the known URL and search for a search engine? internet came up 6 out of 25 clicks. Sad.

People are searching for anything because it was impossible ot get onot the WWW from the home page. Alot of old people were very confused and thought that the only way to find something was ot search for it and click. AOL doesn't want you ot go on your own, they want you ot use their keywords so that they can reap the reward from it.
I spent hours trying ot convince my grandmother about the above.

Really? Its still set up that bad that you can not even type in a URL? I used AOL when it was like 2.5 back in 94-95 and I was blown away about how un-user friendly it was. They never changed it?

Haven't used it recently, but the damage was done years ago for those who had enough trouble trying ot mentally grasp the cordless telephone.

Now that I think about it, couple years ago everything (TV show, contest, Movie, etc.) had a web address AND a AOL Keyword mentioned at some point. Just never realized AOL had actually made keyword surfing a higher priority and more accesible then typing a URL.

Lame.

I'm sure that alot of money changed hands based on keyword based site usage. Anyone have an idea about how much money keywords were responsible for?

I was aiming for the native angle, glad you picked up on it. I was also playing on the fact that everyone has a lewd grandpa who is always trying to get you to sit on his lap. As you can tell, I've given this alot of consideration.
