What's a house cat defending itself from?
I supposed that depends on the house. In Mossholder's house? I don't think I want to know.

I'm against getting a cat declawed normally, but our indoor only male Tony, had recent;y taken to using his front paws on our feet and ankles whenever we walked within easy range. It's not something our vet recommends normally for the cats under her care either, but she cared for 2 of our cats, since they been rescued. (It is hard to walk into her office without wanting to bring another cat home.)

So when we took him in to get his claws trim, he got declawed in front. He sulk for a couple of days, but being able to walk barefoot without worry in around the house, we all are happier.

The other cat Godiva, has to be sedated before she is seen for even minor vet visits, and is known for attacking anyone who tries to pick her up. She does try to escape outdoors whenever she can, though so she can keep her claws. I'm more worry about her using her teeth to find out if humans are as tasty, as she thinks we might be.

I'm not worry about the cat scratching the couch and rugs around here, as much as I am in making sure Jonwin keeps the litter box cleaned. (I don't do any job around the house that takes heavy lifting to do.) Though when my dad moves into a smaller place and I get the chair with needlepoint seat and back, I may have to cover it with tea oil.

I'm not too sure if this has been mentioned. This is a pretty good alternative if you want to try it out.

I did it for my cat and about the only downside is that they don't all fall off at the same time, so you'll sometimes have a claw or 2 loose. Still very effective. You could try it and see how the cat respondes to not having claws 1st before you do it and can't turn back.

I can see why people do it, and they good reasons they have for declawing their cat, but I just wouldn't do it myself. I've had my finger nails ripped off (I don't rember how really since I was 6) and it hurts... alot.

As for cats being indoor/outdoor, sometimes it's for their own good. My sister has the sweetest cat I've ever met and she's kept inside because she'd get killed by the coyotes that live in the area.

If your vet is just ripping off your cat's claws without benefit of surgery or anesthesia, you might want to find a new vet.

Smiley: laugh I love you, Yan. People that extrapolate about people's personalities based on whether or not they choose to declaw cats seem to be of the self-important and judgemental variety, and not really people I care to hang around with.

As for me, my only kitty was declawed. She was a terror as a kitten, and the only way my parents would accept her in the house after I moved back home from school was if I got her declawed. We compromised and did her front paws only. She is a sweet cat, but not afraid to bite or scratch the hell out of you if need be. She's gotten in a couple of fights outside and she's held her own. She'll be twelve this Easter and is still fiesty as ever, albeit huge (28lbs, about 3ft tall when standing on her hind paws).
