I am speculating here but, I think more companies are offering paternity leave because more woman are having C-sections. Again, just speculation.

I'd guess it's because it's a great PR move that really doesn't cost very much in the long run.

why are more women having C sections? I dont get it. I can totally understand if there is a medical issue, but this reasoning a lot of women I see that its less damaging to the body than vaginal birth blows my mind. Or the convenience of picking the due date. If convenience is more important than allowing your baby the time it needs in the womb, then you will be completely in for a surprise when you realize there is no such word for the next 5 years of your life.

You are surprised by the vapid, self-centered trend of Americans?

Has your head been under a rock for the past 10 years?

No, I am being serious here. Why are you surprised that the trend is to take a course of action that is not the most beneficial to the child? Do I need to point at Nobby's sig?

DSD, I have two kids. My son was breach (and 9lbs 8ozs) so, my wife had toi have a C-section. We were told by her doctor, that she needed to have another with our second child even though she (my daughter) was not breach.

You can google c-section and come across thousands of different articles praising c-sections and thousands against c-sections. I can not say which is right and which is wrong. I was just stating that C-sections are at an all time high in the US. womans journal

I am glad I had paternity leave after each of them, my wife was laid up for weeks.

Firstly, I can not believe that doctors are allowing this to happen so commonplace, when its been shown that C sections are nowhere near as safe for the body when birthing than vaginal birth, unless of course for medical reasons. If you deliver vaginally, you are allowed to rest in the hospital for 48 hours if you choose. Csection? You have to stay for 4 days. And then you're not supposed to do anything but lie on the couch for another week miimum.

It just disgusts me that people, esp doctors, think this is an ok thing to do. Its not minor surgery folks. Its a big deal!

Like any surgery, there are always the possibility of complications. A personal expl, a friend of mine just had a baby in July via C section. She had to have one, because her uterus is tipped and no amount of pushing could get her first two kids out and they did a C Section then. Unfortunately this time, the Dr somehow sliced her bladder during the operation. She was bedridden for a week, stuck to a catheter and she still feels pangs. There is the possibility she may have long term issues later down the road.

Im not attacking the C section. I know it is very much needed for certain circumstances. What Im attacking is the convenience issue many people go with it. I.E. " My doctor is going on vacation around my due date, so we scheduled to have a csection before he leaves."
"I dont want to deliver vaginally. I hear its one of the most painful things ever. I asked my doctor if I could have a Csection and he agreed. He said I wont feel a thing."

I'm with you DSD, why do that to yourself, to your baby unless it is medically needed. It's major surgery, the cut through muscle that will never be the same again, they often cause more damage than they prevent. Didnt Brittney "I'm a trailer trash whOre" Spears have a C-section because she didnt want to deal with the pain?

I totally agree with you DSD. C-sections can have unforseen problems. After my wife's first C-section, they stiched her nerve ending incorrectly and she was in pain until the her second C-section, when the fixed her.

I also agree that woman should not have C-sections unless it is needed BUT, I am a man and I really do not have a right to make that choice.

I personally think doctors schedule C-sections more because they make more money on them.

Katie, I agree with you also...

My wife always says it is difficult for her to lose weight or "flatten out her stomach" because she had a C-section. She says they cut through and damage muscle when doing it.
