Voodoo Catholic Priests?Follow

http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/africa/08/16/africa.catholic.witchcraft.reut/index.html wrote:
JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (Reuters) -- Southern Africa's Catholic bishops have warned priests to stop moonlighting as witch doctors, fortune tellers and traditional healers, and to rely on Christ for miracles.

The Southern African Catholic Bishops' Conference, which represents bishops in South Africa, Swaziland and Botswana, said on its Web sites some priests were adopting the traditional African practice of calling on ancestors for healing.

The bishops ordered priests to "desist from practices involving spirits," and to steer clear from witchcraft, fortune-telling and selling spiritual powers or magic medicines.

"The belief that ancestors are endowed with supernatural powers borders on idolatry. It is God, and God alone, who is all-powerful while the ancestors are created by him," said the pastoral letter to priests issued earlier this month.

Many in Southern Africa turn to sangomas -- or traditional healers -- to cure illness, ward off evil spirits and even improve their sex lives. Sangomas, who play a key role in rural communities but are also revered by many in towns and cities, call on ancestral spirits to heal and give advice.

Some Christian sects, like the South Africa-based Zion Christian Church, fuse traditional African beliefs about the power of the ancestors with orthodox Christianity.

The Southern African bishops said Catholic priests should instead heal in the name of Jesus Christ, and should tend to the soul, not just the body.

It tickles my funny bone to think about the looks on the faces of hard-lined Catholics trying to grasp the situation.

Priests and Bishops of Catholicism, who are supposed to believe in God and God alone (and Jesus of course, but then that gets into the holy trinity thing and doesn't need to be gone over again), are practicing voodoo, fortune telling, and ancestral worship.

And now I see their heads are going all asplodey! Yay!

Seriously, what class did everybody skip in seminary school that made them ignore such a fundamental aspect of Christianity? Not that I don't condone the mixing of religions, especially when it's being used in a positive manner, but to ignore the core of the religion you were indoctrinated into yet still claim to practice seems kinda silly to me.

What's next, Satanic-Baptists?

Well, the Catholic church has been under the gun for being intolerant, among other issues. Perhaps the priests were hoping to make some kind of connection with the local people so they could try to slowly convert some of them. Or maybe the priests were converting? Either way, I'd pay some money to see a priest chanting some voodoo chant while holding the Rosary or maybe saying the Hail Mary while holding a snake.

I'm so going to Hell.

Cultural collision of Catholicism and Native religions is nothing new, and been going on for centuries. In many countries, Catholicism isn't the finite thing that it is here.

My priest used to tell me that God presented himself in the way that cause you to best identify with him, and he wasn't one to interfere with that decision. I wish I found more of that attitude here.

Things have been downhill ever since the Church stopped mandating that all Masses be held in Latin, God's chosen language of Christianity.

Of course not. All religion is essentially identical. It's just about brand loaylty. You don't sell Pepsi in your Coke vending machine, that's all.
